I passed this earlier today and thought it would make an interesting photo as petrol is now almost €2.00 per litre.

The blue sign must date from the days when petrol was well below €1.00 per litre and probably actually from when it was well below £1.00 per litre.

@helvick the pump however is rocking 1.70...
@triploidtree @helvick fab photo. I recall when the price went so high, you had to double the price shown on the pump. Not sure if that was here or US. I know they made that great clacking sound as the numbers turned. Jeez, so dating myself with this one!
@lumendecens @helvick oh that'd melt my head. I think pump technology has kept up with prices handy enough since moving to the euro. too handy maybe...

@lumendecens @triploidtree

I remember that happening waaay back when the price of a gallon on petrol broke £1 in the late 1970s.

@helvick @triploidtree My dad had a garage with his brother in Clonskeagh back then, so that probably was it. Worked there the 1/2 day Sat it would be open.

@lumendecens @triploidtree

I was passing through Killeagh earlier and there’s a classic Irish garage there, the original Mick’s Motors as it were: Nissen Hut style curved corrugated roof with the classic rectangular stepped front like yours.
The doors were open and there was some bloke working on a 1970s motorbike inside. Classic.

When I saw it I was thinking I should have taken a picture and sent it on to you.

@helvick @triploidtree Would have loved to see it alright. Must keep an eye on @blag for #signpaintong ideas.

@lumendecens @helvick @triploidtree That building reminded me of this story:

As for historical pricing, here's one from a time when ten cigarettes cost 6d (pence):

Moving Walls to Save a Ghostsign | Ghostsigns

Couple buys a building so that it can be moved 150ft to allow for a highway widening project. It features a coca-cola ghostsign photographed by Martin Garfinkel

Moving Walls to Save a Ghost Sign| Ghostsigns | In an effort to save this fading and rusting shop front, Beth and Tony Walls moved the entire building 150ft to allow for a highway widening project. Martin Garfinkel of Roadside Gallery has captured it beautifully in this fine art print, available to buy here. Martin tells the story as follows. RE Ringer General Merchandise,
@blag @helvick @triploidtree Thank you, thata's a great article. Reminds me of Yemassee in South Carolina that had a similar architecture on one building and ghost sign on the other. Neither likely to be moved.
@triploidtree Yeah I’ve seen that pump open relatively recently but it’s taken a fairly rapid down turn. I’d hate to see anyone try to turn it on again now.
@helvick The earliest I became aware of Petrol prices was just before the 1970s oil crisis. A Gallon (Litres not used then) cost 36p. After the oil crisis it went up to 79p a gallon.
