Get Lucky 🙂

@MissInformation does anyone know how the music rolls work?

It seems there are too few holes for such a complex multi-instrumental piece. I would understand if each line was its own instrument, and the pitch was set with width, but they all seem uniform.

@RiverFox there is a description on his website, but it's not that long.

@RiverFox @MissInformation

From what I know of player instruments, they typically work by vacuum. Observing this one, I infer that some of the perforations select between "instruments" or "voices" at a given time, and others control what notes are played.

@RiverFox @MissInformation In general: The roll is fed at a pretty fast speed, the second thing is the instrument switcher, most instruments simply play the same line and get switched on and off by probably those joined up hole constructs near the bottom (at least there is a pretty high correlation between them getting fed and instruments switching)
@RiverFox @MissInformation that is exactly what I thought.
@Wittenborner @RiverFox So, barrel organs are essentially very simple MIDI players, in this case using a 31-note music roll. These are long rolls of thin wood with holes punched for the available instruments. There are a few small communities that convert modern songs into sheet music using software and a punch. However, many of these community websites are in German or Dutch.
@Wittenborner @RiverFox hHere is a short explanation of the machine in a video:

So how does the Mechanical Organ work?

@MissInformation Soo analog - hilarious!
👍 👍 👍 😎
@MissInformation 10/10 would show this to a small Victorian child
@MissInformation such a nice track to organize! 🫶
@MamaLake @MissInformation I've heard this instrument in circuses. I do believe there's another name for it but I forgot what it is.
@MissInformation Nice vidéo. I know someone who adapt and transcribe music on paper. 10 Years ago he made a very cool video with a Mickael Jackson song. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fnb7EqfykF4&pp=0gcJCR4Bo7VqN5tD

@MissInformation If you like (Dutch) barrel/mechanical organs like you see & hear here, I can recommend two museums in the Netherlands:

- Museum Speelklok in Utrecht: https://www.museumspeelklok.nl/en/
- Draaiorgelmuseum in Haarlem: https://www.draaiorgelmuseum.org/english (only open on Sundays though)

Or just visit a busy Dutch shopping street, especially in the weekends. And bring a few euros for the organ player!

Museum Speelklok

Museum Speelklok is the ultimate music museum in Utrecht! Discover the wonderful world of musical machines, from barrel organs to music boxes.

Museum Speelklok
@MissInformation Holy shit, thats awesome.
@MissInformation C'est des dingos 🤪 🤩 !
@MissInformation amazing! I love it. Tech meets art. Thats the way
@MissInformation @TheBreadmonkey Huge missed opportunity to put shiny plastic helmets on the figures on the front of the organ, tbh
@MissInformation
That's wonderful 😃.
I've always wondered what these steam organs looked like inside / round the back.
Excellent tune to 😎.
@MissInformation Absolutely brilliantly badass
@MissInformation
Is he on mastodon?

@JFG for all people: can we reach him over / within the fediverse? Mastodon is only one software among many.

@MissInformation

@MissInformation

Technik, die begeistert! Danke fürs Teilen!

Btw., für meine Ohren ist das bis jetzt die einzige erträgliche Version dieses Musikstückes. 😉

@MissInformation I have questions. First: how do we get such a thing to #39C3? Second: do we already know people who write software which converts midi to punchcard and the other way around? Third: how much faster than 24h will we make it to its first rickroll?
@MissInformation is the music tape made of wood veneer?
@evdelen @MissInformation no, it's thick cardboard (I used to work on a travelling steam fairground, and spent a lot of time putting music books through the Gavioli organ)
@MissInformation wow, how do they bring the arrangement onto the card stack? MIDI to CNC code to lasercut?
@sofasophia

@MissInformation

I know, if I'd been born 120 years ago (this is roughly the time frame for this right - the late 19th century?), this is what I'd do for a living (well, surely with other tracks then)

:)

@MissInformation

Absolut irre !!
Was für ein #Aufwand, so eine Lochkarte zu erstellen. Das Ergebnis ist atemberaubend.
Und jetzt noch #PharellWilliams dazu singen lassen. Old-Tech ist auch faszinierend. 😁👍

@elmiko Eat your heart out, OP-1

@MissInformation

Anyone else smell caramel popcorn and cotton candy now...? 🎪 🎠 🍿 🍭

@MissInformation

Those Music Machines where present on every fair here in Northern Germany and in the netherlands. They where the point to meet with friends for a walk around the fair. And while waiting the people where dancing in front of the Music Machine!

Playing more actual songs like this one I would bet they will see a successful return!

@MissInformation amazing reminder how clever technology has nowadays everyone in our pockets. This is awesome technical work, yet obsoleted by any raspberry pi or smart watch even. Neither is simpler than this, but does hide it's complexity from users. Unlike this old model.
