AP:It’s not just vaccines — parents are refusing other routine preventive care for newborns

"Medical mistrust is spreading beyond vaccines: Refusals of vitamin K shots for newborns have nearly doubled since 2017, alarming doctors nationwide.
Newborns without the shot are 81 times more likely to suffer potentially deadly bleeding, a preventable complication that once affected 1 in 60 babies."

New parents are shunning proven preventive care for their infants in effort to be 'natural'

Doctors across the nation are alarmed that skepticism fueled by rising anti-science sentiment and medical mistrust is increasingly reaching beyond vaccines to other safe and routine care for babies. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that refusals of vitamin K shots rose steeply between 2017 and 2024. Those shots can prevent potentially deadly bleeding. A subsequent research review found that U.S. parents who declined vitamin K shots were 90 times more likely to also refuse the hepatitis B vaccine and an eye ointment that can prevent potentially blinding infections. Pediatricians say these refusals put their youngest patients at grave risk.

@DeniseGutzmer Thanks! Will change the link.
@ai6yr
I read the article earlier today and was so frustrated with parents not vaccinating their children.

@ai6yr

I remember the line from a Niven essay from “all the myriad ways” a compilation of short stories and essays.

“ think of it as evolution in action”

The super rich have deliberately promoted science skepticism, and they also seem to have this cult of global extinction thing going on.

Funny how everything they do just manages to make human life, more precarious, short, nasty and brutal

@ai6yr Yeah sadly I can directly attest to this. My wife also an RN works in a NICU and this is becoming more and more common.

The Vitamin K is critical to prevent bleeding and strokes
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/protective-vitamin-shots-newborns-decline

And the eye ointment? TO prevent pink eye or anything else (at that age it can result in blindness) they picked up while being born.

These parents should have to put money in escrow to cover these avoidable problems.

Why? If a kid has a stroke, the odds are long if they can ever go home. We can send INCREDIBLY medically complex home and our incredible parents can do amazing things (I am talking ventilators, feeding tubes et al.) but some cannot and these go to nursing homes. We become very close to the families because we are their ride home for every procedure, every admission and the like. The sad reality is this level of care will costs 10's of millions over the course of this kiddo's life Maybe these imbeciles should put their money where there ignorance is

Protective vitamin shots for newborns on decline

Scientists identified an ongoing drop in newborns receiving a vitamin shot that helps to prevent dangerous bleeding.

The Koch brothers. The same damn rich people who funded cigarette misinformation, climate misinformation, and science skepticism.

These people hate public health, because they have the pesky habit of identifying their deadly products.

The very worst of them are a freaking extinction cult. What do you think AI in robots replacing everybody is for, or more practically what all the surveillance in population control surveillance awards is for?

These guys hate everyone

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @cvvhrn @MsMerope That last line is very true. At least, my small sample of billionaires I know or have run across, a chunk of them definitely hate everyone. (not all, mind you... but more "terrible people" than "good people" the more money people have, for sure).

BBC also did a version of the hobbit and lotr; however I prefer the Mind's Eye version.

@cvvhrn @MsMerope @ai6yr partly we got here through over-medicalisation of birth and related trauma.

Men with qualifications believe they understand childbirth better than the women who go through it. They act like educated men often do, and disregard the thoughts and feelings of women in their care. While birth may be safer on paper, women are often subjected to unnecessary interventions and have their hopes and opinions ignored and overruled. Then they get their trauma dismissed because "at least the baby is healthy".

Women who go through that often lose faith in the medical establishment. Very soon, the same people who traumatised them are telling them what they "must" do to their babies. And every fibre of their being is desperate to protect themselves and their children from further harm. Alternatives can seem very attractive.

@MsMerope @cvvhrn @ai6yr

I keep thinking of that quote from Larry Niven in one of his essays in “all the myriad ways”

Think of it as evolution in action.

It’s not pretty and it’s not nice but it’s hard to avoid the truth of it

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @MsMerope @cvvhrn LOL well, they're about to do a true Darwin on themselves (ie if you're killing off your kids, or killing yourself before you have kids, that is true Darwin effect).

There’s been a packed field for Darwin awards for some years now

@GhostOnTheHalfShell
I pity the jury of the Darwin Awards now there are so many more candidates to shift through. I mean seriously, how do you reduce all of this to a somewhat manageable short list?

The absolute sadness of anti-vaccer parents is that they are hurting their children beyond repair. The measles, polio and the like are not something people should joke about. Without the protection of a vaccine these infections diseases can change young people's lives in a very bad way.

What we do allow ourselves to do is ridicule these parents for their outrageous stupidity. See it as our way to mentally process those people's choices.
@cvvhrn @GhostOnTheHalfShell @ai6yr @MsMerope

@alterelefant @noodlemaz @cvvhrn @ai6yr @MsMerope

The effects go beyond their children, though, because herd immunity. Their choice also affects other people’s children.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell
That is indeed correct. Their bad choices affect society as a whole, putting everyone at risk. However it is foremost their own children who suffer from the consequences. Although reduced herd immunity for society is definitely a thing to worry about, it is the fate of those children that scares me personally the most.
@noodlemaz @cvvhrn @ai6yr @MsMerope

@alterelefant @noodlemaz @cvvhrn @ai6yr @MsMerope

Parents doing something antithetical to the idea of parenthood. Any child that dies from what somebody else has inflicted on them is cruel and inexplicable

@alterelefant @cvvhrn @GhostOnTheHalfShell @ai6yr @MsMerope I think there are better ways, is my point. I know where you're coming from. But talking - as commenter after me said - as if their choices stop with them, or indeed their children, is wrong. Not just morally, factually. Laughing at people never changes their minds. And I know how hard it is not to do, I've been here long enough.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @ai6yr @MsMerope @cvvhrn

True story: in 2007, the hub & I were interviewing doulas during my third trimester with our one-and-done. All was going well with the first until she talked excitedly about how her 6 kids all had *natural immunity* to chicken pox, measles, etc etc bc of *healthy living.* 😱 We looked at each other & hub says, That's not how immunity works. (His dad is a pediatrician.)

End of interview. Next!

@PamelaBarroway @GhostOnTheHalfShell @MsMerope @cvvhrn 😱 I wonder if she washes her hands or doesn't believe in germs.
@ai6yr @PamelaBarroway @GhostOnTheHalfShell @MsMerope Um excuse me "germs" you cannot prove there are germs. Disease Demons? I can speak with full authority

@cvvhrn Ha! Right?!? I mean, that's kinda where the discussion was going. It was our first experience with the antivax / crunchy mom movement and man was it an eye-opener!

@ai6yr @GhostOnTheHalfShell @MsMerope

@PamelaBarroway @cvvhrn @ai6yr @MsMerope

I am looking at the urban dictionary definition of the sort of things crunchy moms do.. no I wouldn’t mind growing vegetables and I don’t wear shoes indoors, especially.. but the rest of the stuff I’ll take a pass

@GhostOnTheHalfShell If it was just about having an extensive home garden or cleaning with common household products like vinegar that would be fine ... but it became so much more, as you discovered.

@ai6yr negligent homicide

once we have a scientific understanding of the situation, it's criminal from there

@ai6yr

Back when I was still using Facebook, so prob more than 10 yrs ago, there were plenty of these idiots back then "questioning" Vit K shots. They could be found on the page for "Natural News", an antivax, conspiracy theory, just general woo peddling echo chamber run by the notorious antivaxxer and grifter, Mike Adams.

Non ironically the people on this page referred to themselves as "woke" and everyone else as "sheeple". It's not far from rejecting vaccines to rejecting any shot. Most of them rejected any modern evidence based medicine. Many rejected germ theory for example.

They were deeply into wellness, and the extreme body purity that demanded. So you can easily see why so many found a very short path from "detox shakes" to "mass deportations now" and white supremacy.

COVID gave these mostly fringe dwellers political power. And here we are, or you are.

Many of these lunatics are behind the so-called MAHA "movement".

Australia has its pockets of antivaxxer communities like Nimbin and Byron Bay, NSW. Unfortunately we're not increasing vaccine uptake anywhere.

Personally, and logically I don't understand why #COVID made people want to have fewer vaccinations. I mean, I do because of politics and conspiracy theories, but there was a non-zero probability no COVID vaccine was developed. We could all still be experiencing periods of (much higher) deaths and disability than we do now. That so many vaccines were, and continue to be developed surely would lead anyone to jump at the chance to get something that in another universe might have never happened.

#Vaccines

@ai6yr I think these folks mean Darwinian rather than natural.
@ai6yr I wish I could figure out
@ai6yr I used to know a woman who, around the time the vitamin k shot was introduced, I think, just before it, lost one baby, got to keep another, lost a third, and finally adopted because she thought it was her making faulty babies. Very soon after that the shot came around, and she could have had kept her babies.

@ai6yr
> “I do think these families care deeply about their infants,” said Dr. Kelly Wade

Actually no, they don't. If they did, they would take responsibility for making sure they got correct information, instead of letting their egos make them vulnerable to quackery. Wilful ignorance is inexcusable.
