A ★★★★ review of Project Hail Mary (2026)

I want every piece of clothing that appears in this movie.

oh and this was a very successful Full Media Blackout for me

I'm only now watching the trailers and HOO BOY they summarize the structure of the film, reveal so many gags and surprises - I strongly suggest avoiding trailers to films you KNOW you're going to see, to take the movie in with fresh eyes

@tvaziri How do you handle the FMBO when going to the theater to watch another movie? Do you close your eyes and ears while the trailers run?
@chrisipedia just did it the other night at The Odyssey trailer

@tvaziri @chrisipedia in fairness, I make an exception for Nolan’s Prologues. It’s almost always an entire section of the very early part of the film and then brief glimpses at best of stuff later in the film. I think he’s pretty careful about revealing too much.

This is assuming you’re referring to the 7-8 minute thing shown at the 1.43 IMAX showings

@tvaziri I long for some movie to confidently be marketed without a trailer. Just a baller director / star coming out and saying “I promise you this is great and worth your time. We’re so confident that we’re not even posting a trailer. Trust us”.
@tvaziri I remember being surprised how much the first one gave away (based on having read the book). But I also wonder if they didn’t reveal things like the book jacket what they’d even show to get people in.
@tvaziri it’s wild especially since there’s a full book that’s like, you know, the whole story that’s been out for years. When the first teaser came out, I ran to read the book to get ahead of spoilers because Weir writes page turners! The Martian’s movie was elevated by me reading it ahead of time. The dumb shortcuts of that film were far less egregious knowing there was something removed. I expect the same of this one. So my advice would be diametric to yours. Read the book before you go!
@pl @tvaziri For me there are plot FMBOs but also other FMBOs that are more about execution. In this case, there are elements of the fantastic book that I am curious how Lord & Miller will visualize, so I’m blacked out for that reason. The reason may vary, but every successful FMBO makes the first viewing better!
@tvaziri I even had a trusted friend who knew this was FMBO for me and messaged me to say “avoid the LEGO website!”
@tvaziri Having read (and loved) the book, my heart sank when I saw the first trailer. So much of the pleasure of the book was in how deliciously the situation unfolds— to have it all laid out like that in the trailer is a crime against storytelling.
@tvaziri I'm seeing it tonight so I'm glad I don't have to avoid spoilers much longer. I finished The Martian the day I watched it in the theater (only time I've ever done that – I'm not usually a "the book was better than the movie guy") but I know hardly anything about this story.
@tvaziri I’m still reading the book so I’ve been on Full Other Media Blackout
@tvaziri I wish movies would lean into more mysterious trailers. Get me hyped through intrigue, not by giving away all the good stuff
