Reminder in ten years from now that the bankruptcy of companies like Volkswagen and Ford (and why we all drive Chinese cars now) will have been fully the fault of short-term gains oriented greedy CEOs and the politicians that accepted bribes from them

‘It’s stupid’: why western carmakers’ retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance

Iran war should be wake-up call about costs of not going full throttle towards EVs as Chinese have done, experts say

@thomasfuchs a silver lining is that cities are slowly but surely rebuilding their streets to no longer give cars the highest priority, making it practical for more people to not need a car
@seanlinsley @thomasfuchs yes. I recall seeing an article quoting the sales ebikes vs cars and it was breathtaking how many more ebike were being sold. Cities designed for these would be so much better by almost every metric.
@thomasfuchs Honda is in the mix too. Interestingly it would be stunning if Toyota – which famously eschewed EVs in pursuit of alt fuels like hydrogen – ended up walking away okay from this; their latest round of North American EVs are much more competitive. But as this article says, the direction is very clear and US (and some EU!) manufacturers aren't on it.
@thomasfuchs one bright side might be how this could start to build a distaste for cars in the USA? Or at least more fertile ground for seeds of better urbanism to take root?
@thomasfuchs VW did just outsell BYD in China.

@Myphatself

For two ridiculous months after having been crushed for many more before.

@thomasfuchs

@peter Ok, I will remind you on Friday Mar 21, 2036 at 6:33 PM UTC.
@thomasfuchs waiting eagerly for BYD to open an Ann Arbor testing center.

In case of VW Greedy State too, that company is in part State owned.

Biggest problem on top of greed is lousy products, not just from VW.

@thomasfuchs It doesn't help that Volkswagen charges for every little thing, preferably through subscription.
