Anyone want a free boat? 🤪

I wonder how many thousands and thousands of dollars would be required to fix it... much be a lot!

@ai6yr
Free tiny home. No plumbing. Might leak.

"need new pistons and sleeves/overhaul, topside wood rot on roof and sides needs to be restored, will need to be towed away"

@ai6yr “needs to be towed”
@ai6yr For free I'd stick it in the garden and use it as an office or a boutique chicken coop.
@geoffl I think it would be a pretty spiffy guesthouse, myself. You'd have to retrofit the head though to plumb it for sewage.
@ai6yr @geoffl Could probably get top dollar as an AirBNB!
@ai6yr looks pretty cool though.
@intrepidhero Check out the listing for the interior... interior is spotless!
@ai6yr @intrepidhero It's all about the transport and storage. If you've got both of those sorted it looks like a bargain for somebody who needs another hobby and potentially a small home at the end of it.
@ai6yr @intrepidhero All those innards would probably look nice in someone's van conversion. ';^)
@jerzone @ai6yr does look pretty nice inside but I was hoping for more shiny brass nautical things. 😁
@intrepidhero And you'd have to airbrush Poseidon on the side of van.
@ai6yr There is nothing as expensive as a free boat.

@larand @ai6yr

LOL.

well, maybe one of those 1 EUD houses in sicily...

@larand @ai6yr
Or as the saying goes, a boat is a hole in the water surrounded by wood or fiberglass into which you pour money.

I miss mine.

BTW, small airplanes are even more expensive — everything from light bulbs on up has to be FAA certified — but they are fun!

Friends' boats and airplanes do help lessen the cost. 😉

@RunRichRun @ai6yr I’ve been fortunate in having friends who owned boats, friends who owned planes, and friends who own old British sports cars. It has saved me untold tens of thousands over the years. 😂
@larand @RunRichRun @ai6yr I have a friend into vintage British motorcycles and small airplanes. His interests have saved me a ton. :)

@ai6yr

the good way to do this is have a friend who has a boat. ;)

@paul_ipv6 I have been told the best way to enjoy sailing, is to learn how to sail and then offer yourself up to help people sail their boats, since they are perpetually short of crew.
@ai6yr @paul_ipv6
just a gentle fyi...
this is a motorized fishing boat.
not a sailboat.

@ai6yr

Like people say in that hobby, a boat is a steel or wood or fiberglass lined hole into which you throw money

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @ai6yr Stan Rogers has two songs about it:
https://youtu.be/-Otq3gJObaA?si=rWqmJSfFDEIfCCG7 (about pouring the money in)

and the more famous one which a shipwrecked man says saved is life because he kept singing the chorus to stay awake waiting for rescue in the cold https://youtu.be/Fhop5VuLDIQ?si=wezIMk7chjPMkCQ8

@ai6yr
Ideal for anyone who already has a 1976 Tayana Pilothouse trawler for parts.

@TidalFlats @ai6yr

LOL.

i have a friend who likes tinkering with MGs. at one point, his wife described the collection as "the parts car and the one that doesn't run".

@paul_ipv6 @ai6yr
Now that's funny. I wa s considering writing "future grounds for Trial Seperation or Divorce" also.
@ai6yr
my POV is this is a free dwelling (ADU) that needs work...
would a floating dwelling be worth the money it costs???
@DonChacale @ai6yr Ok, I give up. Why does it have to be floating in order to live in?
@mappingsupport @ai6yr
doesnt. you have a place to put it... you could live in it.,,
@DonChacale @ai6yr
I've heard living aboard can beat rent in the short term in land-scarce coastal towns but marina fees are not unlike HOA fees.
@n1vux @DonChacale @ai6yr I've got a live-aboard friend who worked out that their moorage and maintenance are on a par with rent, but for colder, damper, more crowded living space.
@dr_a @DonChacale @ai6yr
And around here (New England), normal boat insurance doesn't cover boats left in water during winter. IDK if live aboards get a rider for 'don't leave sheltered marina slip' for winter or assume liability for what a nor'easter can do. Those recreational boats that aren't sailed to a sunnier latitude, by owner or hired crew, are either tricked south or pulled out, propped up, and shrink wrapped.
@dr_a @DonChacale @ai6yr
Wind can topple a shrink-wrapped recreational boat on a stand in the marina yard, but at least it's insured. But that doesn't work for living.

@dr_a @n1vux @DonChacale @ai6yr

I have known people who saved money by living on board a boat.

But that was comparing marina fees to the cost of an apartment in Berkeley.

@michael_w_busch @dr_a @DonChacale @ai6yr
Yep. Over priced port cities with inadequate dry acreage in commuting distance is prime place for this life hack, whether SF Bay or Boston Harbor.
@n1vux @michael_w_busch @DonChacale @ai6yr There seem to be a lot of live-aboard folks in Seattle since we're a pretty good spot for that life.

@n1vux @michael_w_busch @dr_a @ai6yr

i live in the north bay. i think any one with an iota of a clue understands this isn't for lake country in minnesota.

@DonChacale @ai6yr

There's also the question of what the fines will be if the city finds out somebody is living in it

@NilaJones @ai6yr

well... i was thinking of docking it ,paying slip fees et cet...
such as...

@ai6yr
Hmmm. Does it come with a trailer?
@ai6yr BOAT = Bust Out Another Thousand or 10's of thousands in this case

@ai6yr

Break
Out
Another
Thousand

@ai6yr Given the proper counting order of 1, 2, many, lots I suspect that repairs are many lots lots of thousands.
