#SouthAfrica, other C5 countries and the #AU are expected to whitewash #SouthSudan 's #coup and civil #war

For the past 12 months, the embers of #CivilWar have reignited. The conflict between president Kiir’s SSPDF and vice-president Machar’s SPLA-IO was only dormant. No meaningful step has ever been taken towards its resolution and #peace.

#War operations have immediately escalated, with #Uganda ’s UPDF participating alongside SSPDF. War crimes are a system. A dismal humanitarian situation and aid are weaponized. A punitive campaign is being waged across the country, with little positive result.

The “transition” has been extended regularly since the end of the last #CivilWar (2013–2018), but has never advanced in any meaningful way. Not towards #peace, nor state-building, and even less towards democracy.

Meanwhile the conflict has been used by Kiir to justify a power grab at every level of the “state”, with several SPLM-IO figures on trial (including Machar) for treason and crimes against humanity. Kiir still made time to travel to #SouthAfrica to support plans for elections in December 2026 and an “end” to the “transition”, 15 years after independence.

Naturally, these elections have no chance of either being free or fair. The constitution remains vague, the opposition is criminalized and warred against, and no electoral census exists. Any election held 9 months from now would be farcical.

Kiir has remained defiant of internal and external forces, pressuring for minimal security and legal requirements to be met. #UN mission UNMISS and NGOs are targets in the ongoing war. European, North American and IGAD concerns are dismissed, and the same goes for #Kenya ’s Tumaini peace process or calls from the South Sudanese religious leaders.

Any legitimation of Kiir’s power grab and of the ongoing civil #war would mean betraying the South Sudanese people and despising their plight.

#SouthAfrica chairs the C5 #AU committee for #SouthSudan. Other core members are #Algeria, #Chad, #Nigeria and #Rwanda. The AU has a particular responsibility in upholding their responsibility to protect the South Sudanese people.
