"And some people say 'These people, they're not even trying to be British. They come here, they bring their own culture, their food, speak their own language, and try to take over the whole bloody place.'

Dunno. Sounds pretty British to me."

Britain Wanted Their Country “back"...From Who?

If you go to the UK and don't bring your own food, you will most likely regret it.

@mndflayr "The only nation to spend a hundred years setting up a spice empire, only to assidiously refuse to use it in their food"

Luckily, that started to change a few years after I was born, we discovered pizza ("Italian Welsh Rarebit"), and importantly a version of Indian food that has become as much a staple as fish and chips (Jewish tradition via Belgium). I built my own tandoor in the garden and my life is all the better for it.

@_thegeoff

I want a tandoor, too!

@mndflayr I based mine on this, cost me about £100 4 years ago, a day's work including a 2hr drive to buy parts. Been used at least a hundred times since. So, so good. https://thecurrykid.co.uk/how-to-build-a-tandoor-oven-at-home-for-under-50/

As British as Butter Chicken.
@_thegeoff Brits should be better informed about our barbaric empire before declaring any positivity about British culture.

@NicelyManifest @_thegeoff

ey, hang on. You're Brits, actually the only actual Brits speaking British.

Now the English... 😉

@doctormo @NicelyManifest @_thegeoff That would be the Welsh and Breton (in Brittany). And Cornish if you include revived languages.
@_thegeoff Yeah, I think the Costa Del Sol might have some opinions on this.

[ British museum enters the chat ]

@dianea Why are there pyramids in Egypt?

Too big to move to London.

@_thegeoff @dianea

😆
Funny because it's too true.

@_thegeoff
British?
Oh yeah, but what about the "flag sticking" ☝🏻

@_thegeoff Even in the UK. The British tried to destroy the languages in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.

@_thegeoff

Hello from australia.

We were very happy to see Cook get it in the neck in Hawaii.

Could have been worse for us though. La Perouse turned up a couple of days late, in there somewhere, and had to sit off Botany Bay while the brits learned how to do a war dance.

Once La Perouse saw them doing the macarena he took off like a rocket.

As an English person, I'm not trying to be 'British' either. I don't believe in it, or any other relics from when we were colonisers. If we want close ties with our neighbours, those relationships should be based on mutual respect, as equals.

And BTW let's not forget that the English are absolutely capable of shitting on their own native languages too (the ones without army and navy - yep, the dialects).

@_thegeoff ok maybe that behavior is pretty British. But when they do it IT'S CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!! (sarcasm)

@_thegeoff I do like Trevor Noah, very sharp and funny with it. :)
@_thegeoff Time to cue up Billy Bragg and the Blokes, "England, Half English".

@_thegeoff

Honestly the brits should be grateful than anyone come to them with their own food.

@_thegeoff As I've said before and will again, anyone in the UK who thinks they have an issue with immigrants needs to watch Stewart Lee's "Immigrants" routine.

Immigrant groups cited (in reverse historical order):
- Bulgarians
- Poles
- Indians / Pakistanis
- Hugenots
- Anglo-Saxons
- Beaker folk
- Neolithic people
- early amphibians
