#homeassistant #newyorker

@web_martin interesting, are you displaying a #HomeAssistant dashboard in a web browser ? Does it refresh automatically ?
@nicobo but YES, it’s a screenshot of a home assistant dashboard. I like to bring dashboards to devices :)

@web_martin @nicobo I wish there was a better way to display dashboards on an ePaper screen. Screenshot just seems so awkward. I'm doing something similar via ESP32 but its a total pain. I never know if its going to work or blow up.

Edit: ESPHome

@ropatrick @nicobo there are other solutions, but in my case I already owned the kindle, so I was looking for a way on how to integrate a dashboard most elegantly there. And for that purpose the screenshot / screensaver worked best. Check eg https://smarthomescene.com/diy/e-paper-dashboards-with-waveshare-and-esphome/
E-Paper Dashboards with Waveshare and ESPHome

Guide on creating clear, informative and beautiful wall mounted dashboards with Waveshare E-paper (e-ink) displays and ESPHome in Home Assistant.

@web_martin @nicobo this is what I am using currently...

Image option wasn't working so Ihad to basically code a custom dashboard I'm ESPHome, which was not fun. It wasn't worth the effort to be honest. It works, but I wouldn't do it again. Also, every time ESPHome is updated, subsequent updates to the display itself are SO slow, sometimes running for hours over WiFi.

Why do we torture ourselves like this?!

XIAO 7.5" ePaper Panel

Powered by XIAO ESP32-C3, this 7.5 inch ePaper display is a energy-efficient smart home e-ink screen designed to seamlessly integrate with Home Assistant. Ideal for showcasing dashboard real-time data, weather updates, and schedules, this compact device offers crisp visuals, 3-months battery life (2000mAh) in deep sleep mode, and easy customization via Arduino. Perfect for modern living spaces, it combines functionality with elegant design for a smarter home experience.

@ropatrick @nicobo oh wait — I thought those were supposed to be easy to program and use?

@web_martin @nicobo they are supposed to be, but it probably depends on what you are trying to do. I was creating a display for my wife that shows her what the weather is like in work when she gets up, so that she can choose what to wear.

I had to map all the variables from HA to new variables in ESPHome, "print" everything to the display specifying exact pixel locations, set awake/sleep times for battery management, how it would update etc. Dashboard link would have been much easier!

@web_martin @nicobo this is my pain!

@ropatrick @nicobo Huh, yeah, thats a lot of manual pulling and polling and waiting and ...

@web_martin @nicobo yep. Don't get me wrong, I felt like a superstar getting it to work but I was like...nah.

All this is not in vain however, from seeing the code earlier I just figured out why my updates seldom complete wirelessly - 10 minutes is not enough to stay awake!

So thanks for your indirect help with that!
