Moin.   Weiß eigentlich jemand warum die Übersetzungen in #Tusky & #Pachli nicht mehr funktionieren? 🤔 #mastodon

@Aeneas How are the Pachli translation settings configured (https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/08/28/2.16.0-release.html#support-on-device-translation-if-installed-from-google-play)?

If "How to translate" is set to "Server only" it's possible your server is having an issue with their translation service. /cc @Anoxinon in case they need to investigate.

Pachli 2.16.0 released

Pachli 2.16.0 is now available. This release supports privacy-preserving on-device translation (when installed from Google Play), remembers and restores your reading position on the Local and Federated timelines, further improves the UX around emojis, and more.

Pachli
@pachli @Anoxinon Okay, I obviously can't verify that. But I have the exact same problem with my second account on #Fedifreude, but with a different error code. This probably started after the last #Tusky update... That's why I installed #Pachli. 😄

@Aeneas @Anoxinon What error does Pachli report with your social.anoxinon.de account?

https://fedifreu.de (if that's the other server you mean) doesn't support server-side translation. Tusky doesn't support on-device translation, so if you want to use translation on fedifreu.de you'll need to use Pachli's on-device translation support (https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/08/28/2.16.0-release.html#support-on-device-translation-if-installed-from-google-play, only available if Pachli is installed from Google Play).

@pachli @Anoxinon No, I downloaded both apps from the F-Droid store. That's non-negotiable for me. I'd rather do without the helpful feature. Error Http 503 & 404...

@Aeneas That's absolutely fine. As the blog post notes:

> While the library is free to use it is not open source. As some Pachli users may want to avoid proprietary libraries this feature is not present on Pachli installed from F-Droid or GitHub. If this is you then you can skip the rest of this section.

That's why Pachli gives you the choice of where to install from.

To forestall the next question: I was unable to find an open source library with similar functionality that worked reliably.

@pachli Okay, thanks for the quick reply and the explanation. I wasn't aware of that. It'll probably be similar with Tusky then. So it's a loss that I'll have to live with for now. 🙂
@Aeneas Getting back to your original question -- if translation is failing on anoxinon.de Pachli should show an error message at the bottom of the screen when that happens. What does that say / can you send a screenshot? That will help understand the problem.

@pachli In Tusky:
It shows only "Fehler beim Übersetzen HTTP 503" in anoxinon & "Fehler beim Übersetzen HTTP 404" in fedifreu.de.

In Pachli it shows:

@Aeneas Hmm, this is two problems.

1. Pachli should not be showing the translation menu option on fedifreu.de because the server can't translate. That's a Pachli bug, I've noted it at https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/issues/2173. Thanks for raising this.

2. The 503 error from anoxinon means the server is rejecting the translation request. That's definitely a problem that @Anoxinon will need to investigate (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/503)

@pachli @Anoxinon in Pachli this Error is only shown at Social.Anoxinon, not at Fedifreu.de, you are right. Sorry. Only Tusky shows the Translation option here. 🤗
