Welcome to year 3 of the "6 months until you're obsolete software developer" club. btw, it is also the 3rd anniversary of the annual declaration that AGI is "just around the corner"

@nixCraft

They think you are a furry?

But aren't you?

@nixCraft it remembers to the topic, in some month we will have auto-pilot driving without any intervention from humans. (or the wanted tesla roadster?)
@nixCraft Where is my Flying Car????
@nixCraft
As with all software developers, they keep making bad estimates of project timeline

@nixCraft

it’s all late because they want to power it all with that efficient fusion reactor which is ready in about 5 years since the nineties…

@nixCraft it will arrive with Tesla’s FSD.

@nixCraft

this should be a poll

@nixCraft Even if Software Engineering is not obsolete, have fun fixing your sales/product manager's vibe coded demo slop for 30% of the salary you were commanding pre-AI.
@nixCraft Just give it 2 more years! And then a few more! And more! But dont stop investing into it!!

@nixCraft

It's so stupid that we don't even get proper tooling out of it.

I mean, AI could definitely be used to improve our lives as Devs, there's enough boring grunt work that's just in between too complicated to automate easily and too simple to be meaningful.

@nixCraft the first time I was told that writing code would ā€œsoon be obsoleteā€ was at university. In 1988. Fortunately for me that, and every proclamation since, had been proved wrong.

Much like I’m convinced that cars will always have a steering wheel, I believe that software engineering will always be a profession.

@nixCraft Oh, I heard that one even a couple of years earlier in the late 2010s, when I was at a company event and the woman leading HR said that software development will all soon be automated away and we won't be needed anymore. Let's just say that since then I've had my position as a software developer longer than she had been in the company in total (she left the company some time after that comment).

I really would like to comment on this, but unfortunately I died a few years ago, like everybody else who got the Covid vaccine....
