Do people do intro posts on Mastodon? I don't know.

Hi, I'm Thomas - new here and possibly moving from Threads because it's driving me nuts.

From the UK, live on a narrowboat, PhD in formal logic focussing on legal reasoning. Now a software engineer trying building a site to document arguments ( Controvis ) - argumentation is one of my main interests (both formal and not).

Economically left and socially liberal. Was a member of the Lib Dems but didn't think they took a hard enough stance against transphobia. So erm, maybe I'll join the Greens, I don't know.

#introduction
#narrowboat

@thomaschristopherking hi Thomas πŸ‘‹

Yes, introductions are customary and if you want it to be seen by more people, especially outside the social coop server, you can add to your initial post the hashtag #introduction.

You can also add hashtags relating to your interests (ex. #narrowboat).

welcome!

@marsiposa That's brilliant and I just realised I can edit it long after the original post.

@thomaschristopherking yes! you can edit long after posting! It's so good for those of us prone to typos πŸ˜…

In case it's useful, some additional info about the edits (please skip if you don't want to read about it now!):

- There will be a record of your edits (i.e. don't use "edit" to delete information you want to actually be gone)

- If you edit a post, Mastodon sends a notification to people that have "boosted" it. It's a safety feature in case, let's say, a bad actor changed the content of a post to something offensive. Most times, though, people uses it to correct information they found after posting.

@marsiposa Ah thanks that's good to know. If people are getting notifications I'll probably proof-read my replies before posting (on Threads I proof-read after posting lol)

@thomaschristopherking notifications go only to boosts (not to faves) but yeah, proofreading is helpful.

A known conundrum is: do I fix the typo and inform everyone about it, or do I let the post keep going around with the typo, and have everyone see it πŸ˜‚

@thomaschristopherking Welcome! Yes, a lot of us do intro posts, and thank-you for yours!

@thomaschristopherking

#Welcome ! Yes, it's great to do #introduction -s Just so we learn a bit about you. You sound like you're going to fit right in. I love the idea of #narrowboat s.. I hope you find your peeps

@thomaschristopherking hello!

FYI, your company sounds awesome and I would like to learn more however,
I went to look at your company site and received an invalid SSL certificate error.

@eljorgeabides OMG thank you for letting me know. It was working yesterday. Will see what is going on.

@eljorgeabides Fixed it!!!

Feel free to ask questions about the site etc. It's really meant more as a social enterprise thing and I love discussing it with people.

Work in progress, recently big UI changes, and I still need to setup a site liveness check lol

@thomaschristopherking why is driving you nutz?
@theraccoonbytes hard to pinpoint. Partly the algorithm I think, I just get shown people making the worst takes from across the political spectrum. I don't just mean takes I disagree with, I mean ones that seem designed to get engagement/rile people up.
@thomaschristopherking welcome! Hope you enjoy it here 😁
@thomaschristopherking I know there are a bunch of fans of canal boats (what I assume you mean by narrow boat) on here, so expect a bunch of followers for that..
@thomaschristopherking Welcome to the fediverse. Thank you for leaving X. The world is better for your doing so.
@thomaschristopherking Welcome! Intro posts are definitely a thing here. Hope you find your crowd here, it takes a little more effort to start with than other places.
@thomaschristopherking It’s customary to do intro posts, but somehow I’ve never managed to do one! Welcome :)

@thomaschristopherking Yes, and welcome. Here you'll find

No algorithm
No ads
No billionaire owners

Plenty of Linux, BSD, and open source users. And of course people interested in saving the planet.

@thomaschristopherking yes, intro posts are sensible. Welcome to the fediverse! You must tell us about your narrowboat living!

@thomaschristopherking
I follow another UK narrowboat liveaboard, in case you'd like to compare notes:

@PKYo

Welcome to the Mastodon community, where connection is more important than reach, and your own choices are the algorithm.

@thomaschristopherking

Welcome Thomas!

Feel free to ask if you want help using this place πŸ™‚ There is also lots of help for new people on the website at https://fedi.tips

Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@thomaschristopherking

Yep, introduction posts are a Fediverse tradition, as is boosting them to help them reach the widest audience. And if'n you're going to ask what is the Fediverse, its a collection of apps that can interact with one another, whether similar like Mastodon and Wafrn (I'm on this), or PeerTube and Friendica.

@thomaschristopherking Following you because I'm glad to see anyone insisting on a hard stance against transphobia from our politicians (yours, mine, any of them).
@thomaschristopherking Welcome aboard!

A bit jealous about the fact you live on a canal boat. We sadly have no real canal system in Switzerland

@monkee your lakes are enormous though!
@thomaschristopherking That's true. And there are a lot of em.

I complain on a very high level here
 would be awesome if all the big ones where connected trough canals.
@monkee yeah, I was working in Zurich for about a month. Took a boat across the lake, went up a mountain, down the other side, and got a boat back (I think, or maybe it was a train). The fact that's possible blows my mind.
@thomaschristopherking
Welcome Thomas. πŸ˜‰
Please show us canal and lock photos, love that you live on water.
@thomaschristopherking Yes, doing an intro post is a time-honoured tradition! Welcome to the fediverse πŸ˜„
@thomaschristopherking We want to see the narrowboat! I mean... welcome!

@thomaschristopherking

They do post introductions. Welcome!

And do join the Greens ;-)

@thomaschristopherking this is a cool intro. What is it like to live on a boat?
@kimlockhartga well today I have been removing mold. So, one aspect is damp and humidity. In general a lot of maintenance work that some people love and others not. The main pluses for me are the travelling, being in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of a city (though we are permanently moored for the upcoming years now), and the nature.

@thomaschristopherking It sounds so great, except as you say, the regular maintenance, and I suppose, storms? I hope where you are moored has some physical protections.

My dad owned a sailboat with three other couples back when Pier 39 was in use in San Francisco (since taken over by sea lions). The marina wanted to sell permanent slip fees, but I talked my dad out of it. Good thing. "Lifetime" don't mean shit if the marina goes under.

@kimlockhartga It's a very very inland waterway, a canal. Furthest we've gotten to the sea was on the tidal Thames. So storms aren't really a concern (er, if they were we would be in trouble because our type of boat has a very shallow draft).

I mean, it does knock about a bit when it's stormy but it's not an issue really.
