FreeBSD risks losing relevance by ignoring AI tooling like Claude Code

Anthropic’s shift from an npm-based installer to a native installer for Claude Code has left FreeBSD users with a deprecation warning, signaling potential abandonment of the platform. The author argues...

@CuratedHackerNews No, we're working on #GenAI policy in #FreeBSD right now. It is not an automatic go or no-go; discretion is required. #Colin #Percival is looking into it. As the old saying goes, "it is important to keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out." @timnitGebru @emilymbender @pluralistic

@CuratedHackerNews I run Claude Code, pi coding agent on FreeBSD15, works (?)
@CuratedHackerNews Also this story is beginning to smell like #AIHype in disguise. Issues like us not having #eBPF support yet are surely more important. #FreeBSD doesn't "risk losing relevance" for the given reason. The original author is frankly talking b*llocks.
@bms48 @CuratedHackerNews How important is the #eBPF support actually?
@mpts @CuratedHackerNews Cloudflare have some #eBPF based sexiness and Microsoft took the hook it uses too, so we are playing catchup: https://blog.cloudflare.com/its-crowded-in-here/
It's crowded in here!

We recently gave a presentation on Programming socket lookup with BPF at the Linux Plumbers Conference 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal.

@mpts @CuratedHackerNews Sure enough eBPF for FreeBSD is in the workplan published today and we have some commercial interest behind the scenes: https://people.freebsd.org/~bms/devsummit/bms-devsummit-2026.pdf
@mpts @CuratedHackerNews #ebpf in #FreeBSD may be extra important now for semi-commercial reasons specific to me and technology I have a stake in now. Patent worthy, but not the eBPF stuff itself. We'd plan to do #DOSP and free-the-future though.
