Common sense capitalism says that I/we should have hoarded this information and extracted rent. F*&% that! Why dream small and grub around in the dirt for pennies?! Let the base data be free and we can spin off bigger and better things.
Steven Hirschorn@jez Nice! I'm also hopeful that OSM being able to produce a reasonable stab at an address database in many built up areas will eventually persuade Royal Mail to free the Postcode Address File, which will also help power more services too.

@jez My late wife worked at 13 Sheridan Terrace at a company called Studor. Upstairs was a company called Life Water. One day she came home and told me that she had had a lovely chat with the girlfriend of the boss upstairs, and she was called Adele. I said, “Yes, darling, that was _Adele_.” She looked at me completely blankly, despite owning one of her albums.
(And, to bring it back to the present, I wasn’t sure whether it is now tiny offices or flats.)
