This is not a "time of need". Iran was attacked whilst at the negotiating table .This is a war of choice, started at a time decided by the attackers. The consequences of a failure to plan and to gain a wider consensus does not of itself place obligations on any 3rd party. Neither do the political consequences of the attackers calling a halt to their attacks. Nato is a defensive alliance, this is not a war of defence. Irans defence does not constitute an attack on a Nato ally.

We could line that bitch with aircraft carriers, sprinkle in dozens of destroyers, battleships lined up end to end in the center, all of them bristling with guns and missiles. Just pull what’s shelling Iran, sail up the assets from the Caribbean, recall the Venezuelan invasion force, pull the Cuba submarines ( almost forgot about them). We just kinda want it open.

That's not how aircraft carriers are supposed to work. They stand back behind concentric layers of defenses and don't let anything get within 400 miles of them-- the Strait of Hormuz is too fucking narrow, the minute they try to go in there they're inside the range of all kinds of cheap land-based missiles and their main advantages are gone.

If we send carriers in there, they might actually get sunk.

I've seen it described as a trap so obvious and stupid it may as well be a cartoon box with a stick under it tied to a string.

Iran probably would've loved to block us from the Strait a long time ago, but didn't because we'd bomb the shit out of them. Now that we're bombing them anyway, they have no reasons left not to give us the finger as hard as they possibly can for as long as they can. Which will fuck up our shit, badly, for years. A Shahed drone is $50k, the average 7 interceptors we throw to take one down cost MILLIONS.

Which is (just one of many many reasons) why this whole fucking mess was A BAD IDEA.

But you're otherwise quite right. If the oligarchs running this show cared about the consequences, they would've put a stop to it.

It's not just Iran that's being destabilized. It's THE WORLD.

The technofascist war profiteers see smoking rubble as easier to control than stable, functioning communities with democratic expectations. They want Iran to look like Gaza, and they're not going to stop with the Middle East. THEY'LL DO IT TO THE USA TOO. Nobody is fucking safe.

@eunews It will be interesting to see what happens if Iran –as announced – allows ships from countries that do not support the war to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. In that case, the listed countries would have facilitated the passage of ships flying their flags.

At least until the U.S. starts sinking those ships. I know, but what isn’t possible right now? 😵‍💫

That’s actually a positive development since WWII: While there have been many “playing with fire” kind of situations (many aweful transgressions, like regional wars killing millions), once there is a scare that it could turn “big”, suddenly everyone’s really sees the need for “peaceful solutions” or at least develops a sudden lack of interest in playing in that particular war.

(Meagure, but it’s something at least.)

So it’s still just Israel and USA ploughing on with their illegal war. Dragging more countries and NATO in by claiming they would be enabling the Strait of Hormuz to reopen is a trap, to both legitimise the war and spread the deaths more widely.

Trump and Netanyahu didn’t consult with allies before they blundered into Iran and Lebanon, but now feel exposed as their horrific actions have financial consequences.

@eunews The Netherlands recently, as in last week, had a KC-135 refeuler flying what I'd guess was practice in southwestern Nevada. Practice for what? No idea, but it was up for a while on ADS-B.
