I popped on the the #Timberborn Steam Community discussions yesterday and there was a baffling (to me) number of people complaining about the new automation tools.

Partly it baffles me because (with the exception of the contamination sensor) you can just completely avoid using them and just play as you did before - so why complain?

But also most of the complaints consist of people complaining that it’s ‘too complicated for anyone who isn’t a programmer or engineer’ and I’m.. like.. whut?

If they were talking about the http bit that would feel proportionate (those 2 tools aren’t designed for most players to use). But they’re talking about the whole thing.

It would seem that there’s a bunch of people out there who think that basic logic is some mystical, elitist code, meant only for programmers, and beyond the ken of most humans.

Concerning.

For clarification:

1. I’m neither a programmer nor an engineer

2. If you’ve ever used the timer on your washing machine, then you’ve done Boolean logic (IF time = 6pm THEN start machine). If you’ve ever cooked a meal then you’ve used Boolean logic (IF chicken > 50% cooked AND Fryer = warmed up THEN put in chips).

You use logic every day, you just don’t call it that. This stuff isn’t beyond ‘average people’ and it bothers me that people think it is

@Lemlems as a programmer (and occasional librarian) boolean logic does indeed come easily to me,

Placement of the sensors however, is not something I'm getting right first time 😅

I did end up with a contamination sensor on top of a flow valve to mimic sluice gate behaviour (although I'm now sensing at the sources and responding accordingly for mid-game badwater diverts).

Using contamination + path-gates is great for automatically shutting down access to water based projects during bad tides.

@avatastic I haven’t used path gates yet - I keep forgetting they exist 😊

@Lemlems
And I was thinking ‚can I pleas also have a #PIDcontroller. Just using yes/no is not enough‘.
The only thing above binary signals is the reaction speed for sluices.

@iamlayer8 I guess maybe they were looking for a balance that would enhance the game without changing what the game is about. Or maybe they’re planning to add more later

@Lemlems
Absolutely. I wouldn’t have expected anything.
And I’m good at finding exactly what I’m missing in a great new feature set.

For example:
How cool would it be to have a UX like #nodeRed to manage all your automation? And JavaScript automation blocks.
