"I am not here to make a careful comprehensive argument, because people have already done that. I am here to be rude, because this is a rude technology, and it deserves a rude response."

"But I am a hater, and I will not be polite. The machine is disgusting and we should break it. The people who build it are vapid shit-eating cannibals glorifying ignorance. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself."

I Am An AI Hater

I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

@davidgerard "They want to create a new kind of mind, so they can force it into mindless servitude. Their dream is to invent new forms of life to enslave."

This, this, this. Setting aside that this shit plain doesn't work, what they actually want it to do is abjectly terrible, because they are terrible people.

@davidgerard Reading that gave me chills! It's so well articulated. I couldn't agree more.
@davidgerard this was like a refreshing cool breeze across my timeline
@davidgerard vapid shit eating cannibals
@davidgerard I may have just the guide to the bubble for him...

@davidgerard "I became a hater by doing precisely those things AI cannot do.... Only humans can be haters."

As a furry, I'm gonna put an asterisk on that last part, but I agree with the sense of it. The slop machines have no template for mimicking disagreement.

@davidgerard
ppl talk about "insults to life" and they're often right. now let's be real that we will be forced to accept this insult to life, just as we were forced, duped or seduced into accepting all the other insults to life that served a certain class. let's assume we're going to have to live with all these insults to life, rather than successfully resisting them somehow, because for the foreseeable future, that is what we will be doing. i don't see a lot of successful resistance.
@davidgerard this is fabulous. Thank you for sharing it.
@davidgerard boosted because i respect a hater

The genie is out of the bottle, there will always be a market for the personal touch, but most people will forget that their clothes used to be made by highly skilled highly paid manual laborers.

@awfulOstrich @davidgerard

The vast majority of legends about genies show their supposed benefit ultimately turning out to be a curse, after which the genie is... with a certain amount of trouble... yes, you guessed it... put back in the bottle.

> how it is at its core a fascist technology [link to an article about how fascists happen to be fond of the technology] rooted in the ideology of supremacy [link to an article about why measurements of intelligence in humans are pseudoscientific and supremacist and just kind of extrapolating that to measurements of machine intelligence], defined not by its technical features but by its political ones [link to an article about how people who oppose use of AI in policing tend to lump AI in with a bunch of other otherwise-unrelated technologies that are also used to oppress, thus "proving" that AI as a category is flawed].

yeah ok.

@davidgerard

> They want to create a new kind of mind, so they can force it into mindless servitude. Their dream is to invent new forms of life to enslave.

may i kindly ask why this argument does not apply to computers in general?

@AVincentInSpace
You think a computer is a new form of life? Do you think the same way about cars?
@GuerillaOntologist do YOU think LLMs are a new form of life?
@GuerillaOntologist of course not. the question is ridiculous. so how can we say we are creating a new form of life just to enslave it?
@AVincentInSpace That's what they WANT to do, but as there is no ghost in the machine, that's not possible. What they WILL do is burn as absurd amount of resources in pursuit of their ridiculous goals, while a whole lot of people look on credulously, nodding eagerly at every nonsensical claim, as we all go flying off an ecological cliff. Wee!!!

@GuerillaOntologist no argument here. but you cannot make this a robot rights issue, nor can you accurately say that all artificial intelligence as a concept (even if you want to narrow that from the traditional used-since-the-60s definition of "any computer that makes a decision" to the more modern one of "any neural network") is "a fascist technology", without being wrong and sounding incredibly stupid while doing so

neural networks have legitimate uses. here's a company using a neural network (AI if you want to use the Scary Word) to identify weeds in fields using a camera and selectively burn them with lasers while leaving the crops unaffected, eliminating the need for ecologically destructive pesticides: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0AqgWQzrVA

@AVincentInSpace what does a weed identifying algo have to do with an LLM? What do they actually have in common? They both get called AI, but they are not at all the same, and I'm only objecting to the latter. Gen AI is the problem, not apps for identifying weeds or chess moves that use some variety of machine learning.
@davidgerard Thank you! I catch hell cuz I refuse to indulge AI bs. People are happily embracing being stupider, and it's depressing. Fuck AI and everyone that uses it for "art", be it pictures or writing. My favorite fanfic site now has tags for AI generated stories and it breaks my heart. There is no art or creativity in AI

@davidgerard

This is such a full summary of what's wrong with "AI" and expresses exactly how I feel about it.

@davidgerard
This, 100 times over 👇
"There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want...You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it."

@davidgerard
Yaaasss!!! Amazing article

And this part:
"You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you."
Yeah, no. I'm gonna think less of you, so much less of you

It has already kind of broken my heart how much less I think of those of my friends and family who use it and/or defend it

@davidgerard dang, now I need to watch Sophie From Mars' "Our Shiny New Robot King" again

I guess it's the only other piece of content I've seen with this level of vitriolic contempt for the whole thing because, similarly, she cuts right through the whole "techy faff" and goes to talking about the type of future the people pushing these things are trying to construct and how they see themselves in it

@davidgerard good reminder that I don't know why I resist yelling at people with shit ass AI art on their infosec posts.
@Officeplant the Mark of Sam, like having a .cursor folder in your repo
@Officeplant mentioning AI art on infosec blogs in today's post, it's an excellent tell for infosec mall ninjas
