Hey #runnersofmastodon — a question:

I’ve been running for years, and while I’m down from my historical high of 30-40 miles/week, I still do at least a 10k 2x/week. But for the last couple of months, my shins have been absolute murder after the first half-mile or so. I need to stop, massage them a bit, before they loosen up after another mile. Any ideas? Maybe time for new shoes?

I’ve been running on Nike Pegasus for a few years, rotating out after 600 miles or so, but just picked up some Salomon Aero Blaze gravel runners because this time of year I’m able to hit the trails early am. Hopefully that’ll solve it… it’s been frustrating!

@autumnleaves My advice, after being derailed by shin splints for a year a couple decades ago, get new shoes, use insoles or orthotics, and retire the shoes at 300-400 miles.

If you run in the cold, look at runrepeat to find shoes that don't lose their shock absorption when it is cold outside.

Shoes are absurdly expensive, but if you want to run and new shoes will let you do it . . . .
