When it comes to consumer protection, no region in the world does it better than Europe. 🇪🇺

On #WorldConsumerRightsDay, it’s worth remembering: more than 50 years of advocacy don’t just sit in policy papers — they show up in your daily life: in fair transactions, safe products, and transparent contracts.

Let’s keep working to make it even stronger!

@EUCommission I am grateful, I know what happens without consumer protection, but you're really going to have to work even harder to protect us all from the billionaires
@janeishly @EUCommission The EU is drafting a bill to limit the amount of political spending per individual, something some member states have already successfully established. This is a crucial step to avoid the cancer of billionaire donations, which have had a deteriorating effect on US politics for decades.

@EUCommission

There is no consumer rights protection without ban on tracker.
I see websites tracker even in reserved area after login. And I see tracker EVEN when I choose to NOT accept cookies.
Please, consider a serious ban on tracker to defend EU consumer rights.

@katttivizzima @EUCommission may I humbly suggest this firefox extension? It removes most of the trackers from urls (still better than none) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/clearurls/
ClearURLs – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-GB)

Download ClearURLs for Firefox. Removes tracking elements from URLs

@nepenthes @EUCommission
@katttivizzima @EUCommission trackers bring money to the table for surveillance, I sadly doubt the EU is willing to ban and lose out on that money yet
@EUCommission so why are you trying to gut the GDPR which embodies our protection?
@EUCommission
And you could even do better.
Regulate BigTech and support free software.
What about fair use?
@EUCommission data protection is also a consumer right and you're currently flushing it down the drain for the billionaires

@EUCommission like the #MERCOSUR you have no shame ...

Reminder: Mercosur will lead to an increase in intercontinental trade, and therefore in pollution
It 'll result in more imports of foodstuffs laden with pesticides
As ecologist, we should avoid making continents interdependent when increase transporting which is polluant
You are intensifying competition, which makes life unbearable for local communities
All this just to sell more cars, wine and luxury goods, which are not basic necessities

@EUCommission I would like to see what are you going to do against blocking the android. https://keepandroidopen.org/
Keep Android Open

Advocating for Android as a free, open platform for everyone to build apps on.

@gondola35xx the @EUCommission has already decided they *want* Android locked down. It's part of their #ChatControl agenda of universal surveillance.

Sorry @EUCommission , but your constant bragging about everything is quite annoying when we know all of what you DON'T do because of your right-wing policies.

Make consumer protection stronger ? You're on !

@EUCommission EU Commission: A very good start, yes.

Now, be strong and stand by your pledge: Wreck the Digital Omnibus right now, right here, and instead protect EU consumers by keeping the high standards of GDPR, Digital Services Act, and whatever.

Crack down hard on surveillance capitalism, not on our Digital Rights. People before business! Foreign corporations doing business in the EU must abide by EU law, no concessions and no shortcuts. Equal rights and equal duties for eyeryone, that's what we call a level playing field.

And protect our freedom and privacy instead of pursuing the wet dreams of mass surveilance. Mass surveillance in EU would scrap both EU consumer rights and EU citizens' freedom rights.

@EUCommission EU has done a lot of good things, like USB-C chargers being mandatory.

But I don't see how you can boast about consumer protection when under sustained attack for age / identity verification to the US, this is completely the opposite of protecting any consumers.

@EUCommission Yes this is true but maybe worth mentioning that the advocacy is done not by the EU Commission but by a tireless civil society like the folks @beuc and @Bundesverband.

Also: passenger rights in #CrossBorderRail please and hands off our right to #privacy !

#omnibus #GDPR #ePrivacy #AIAct

@ilumium @EUCommission You better believe we're going to win those #CrossBorderRail passenger rights!

@EUCommission
But you are weakening the GDPR!

One of the very few instuments for the people and not for the industry.

Cowards!

@EUCommission How easily people pocket all the benefits and bellyache about what's still to do -- there's plenty, and no time for any complacency.

But 👏. Onwards and upwards.

@EUCommission Yet you still keep letting Zuck, Musk etc. take their wrecking balls to our society, polluting our minds, manipulating our elections, etc.

You, @EUCommission, doggedly insist on Microslop submission, counter to your own stated goals, rules, and the express will of the EU parlement; your actions keep enabling and empowering, while you spout lovely words about consumer protection.

Walk the walk. Don’t just talk the talk.

@EUCommission
Data protection rights are protecting consumers too. You might want to remember that while you're pushing for your Digital Omnibus to be enacted.
Hi @r_alb, the rights, principles and safeguards that define EU data protection are not in question. What we are addressing in our Digital Omnibus are calls for targeted amendments to clarify, simplify and harmonise certain aspects of the GDPR. There is no move to weaken user rights. Access, correction and erasure remain at the centre of our data protection approach.
@EUCommission
That is what the press releases say, yes. But the actual proposal speaks a different language. NOYB has published a few analyses, including this one: https://noyb.eu/en/digital-omnibus-eu-commission-wants-wreck-core-gdpr-principles
Digital Omnibus: EU Commission wants to wreck core GDPR principles

The EU Commission has published its proposal for the "Digital Omnibus". The planned changes to the GDPR would lower protections for Europeans

noyb.eu
@EUCommission is privacy a consumer right?
@EUCommission you are right, we do have a lot of comon sense in our European laws & protection of civilians that has been lost in other places on this earth. Please, in this current time & context, do not neglect the data protection & sovereignity - we need independance from USamerican tech & data control to stay a strong community, able to stand on its own as world leading economic & science power. Protect our goverment's & PERSONAL data from foreign grabs.

@EUCommission Consumer protection is definitely one of the EU’s strengths, and we can see the results in our daily lives.
But that’s exactly why we shouldn’t stop at celebrating: we need rules that are truly effective against new forms of digital abuse, from disinformation to platforms that try to bypass existing safeguards.

Protecting consumers today means ensuring transparency, clear rights, and a digital environment that doesn’t leave anyone behind.

@EUCommission
Just phrase it that way:

When it comes to consumer protection, the other parts the world do it EVEN WORSE than Europe. 🇪🇺

One of the worst examples: "Nutri-Score"

Confusing, misleading, and often plain nonsensical:

Declarations that claim to HELP consumers must be absolutely clear and right.

It is bad to implicitly expect consumers to look closely at how the Nutri Score is meant - and how it should NOT be understood.

Nutri Score: Unrealistic 'solution' invented by dreamers!

@EUCommission let's see you take on the fascist tech bros, then we can truly applaud. It is high time that Meta, X, TikTok etc. are made to comply with laws and to be held responsible for pushing disinformation. On the current trajectory these companies will likely achieve the destruction of European democracy through their *active* support for far right and fascist parties.

@EUCommission

World consumer rights day.

EU Law, is WEAK
If a fault appears within 6 months of purchase, it is presumed to have existed at the time of purchase.
After 6 months from purchase, the consumer may need to prove the fault was not the result of normal wear and tear or misuse.

Dutch law states that the guarantee duration is dependent on the expected lifespan of a product.

Portugal and Spain 3 years warranty.

About time for 5 years warranty on all products over 50 Euro.

@Kerplunk That's a pretty weak attempt on the credibility of the EU.

"Dutch law for this specific situation is better, so EU law stinks."

Dutch law governs 17 million consumers, EU law some 450 million. EU law is a compromise that must work for 27 countries, not just for one single small one.

"Perfect is the enemy of good."

@EUCommission

Nice

do you also protect me against Google wanting every developer for Android Apps to register with them or else their Apps will not run on android? I as a consumer want to decide what Apps I install by myself

Hi @henry_null, thanks to our DMA regulation we are giving power back to developers by reducing their reliance on Apple and Google’s app stores. Developers can now directly inform users about better offers outside of app stores. They can also distribute their apps via alternative app stores or directly from the web. Consumers benefit too, as they can now be informed within the apps about better and cheaper offers and be redirected to them.

@henry_null @EUCommission
The #whores of #supression and #arrogance do not care what people want. They feed lies to keep then inline and not rise agains the system that hasn't served the benefit or the will of the citizens in decades. European union is weak and should be dismantled because it only seem to cause more bureaucracy. "The more laws and restrictions there are,
The poorer people become."
@EUCommission I don't see any actions against AI, quite the opposite, so I don't see that consumer protection you're talking about.

(I know they are not reading this but...)

@EUCommission In theory, the reality sadly looks different.

I'm from Germany.

@EUCommission Does that also include NOT weakening the GDPR?
Hi @paranormal_distribution, what we are addressing in our Digital Omnibus are calls for targeted amendments to clarify, simplify and harmonise certain aspects of the GDPR. There is no move to weaken user rights or limit people's control over their data. Access, correction and erasure remain at the centre of our data protection approach.
@EUCommission @paranormal_distribution Currently, how this omnibus is written is just a total annihilation of all GDPR protections.
