@lonespur That would have set a Great precedent for future reference

@lonespur

That, on that original sin: also failing to integrate and absorb the cultures that were already here, creating the American culture. There is no American sense of cultural self.

@Edelruth @lonespur You mean: failing to integrate INTO and absorb the cultures that were already there, right? As in the original sin being: landing on a different continent and saying “Right, this is our land now. We’re calling the shots from now on.”

@ArtHarg @lonespur

Exactly. And I'm not sure that had happened before.

@lonespur

We can't make the same mistake after Trump. All GOP have to be punished, so much so that the next time a Trump-like figure rises, their own party removes them to avoid being punished themselves.

@lonespur

The USA was based on a flawed foundation to begin with.

Not a Democracy, as advertised, but
"A Republic. If you can keep it."

...apparently, we can't any more.

A house divided against itself, based on a faulty foundation is doomed to fall, for all our trying to do interior decoration, buttressing it with support beams, or trying to shore it up.

Let it come down, so we can build a True Democracy, one that works for all, and has no invisible underclass.

Why MAGA is a Futile Quest and Fighting Nazis is a Sham

@lonespur I'd argue the way the Missouri Compromise and Kansas-Nebraska act was handled was the beginning of the end. We could've ended this before it even began.
@lonespur We were under the mistaken impression that we had won the Civil War, just because Lee surrendered after Gettysburg. Now we know that military defeat does not make the evil ideas go away.

>> Failing to properly punish the #confederacy…

AND failing to punish #Nixon…

And failing to punish #Trump in first term:
— for seeking help from Russia and benefitting from it (#Mueller evidence)
— for election interference in #Georgia
— for election tampering with #fakeElectors
— for #coup attempt on #Jan6
— for theft of #classifiedDocs and #nuclear secrets

This has been a series of deliberate bipartisan "failures" with #Biden responsible for last 5

My alternate history novel takes place in a universe where instead of the Confederacy losing the Civil War, they lose the Civil War even harder, just absolutely crushed

@lonespur This is a correlation is not causation problems. Sometimes you get the cause and effect reversed. In this case, I think we failed to punish the Confederacy because the cesspool was already in place. The cesspool made the 4/5 law. The cesspool slaughtered Native Americans from the day the Mayflower landed. English settlers inherited the cesspool Columbus built from the Spanish. We could trace it further back, but even his contemporaries thought Columbus was a brute.
@lonespur Columbus wasn’t punished. The “Founding Fathers” didn’t reject slavery. The Confederacy wasn’t punished. Jim Crow and Manifest Destiny flourished together. The dishonest invasion of Mexico wasn’t punished. The US failed to reject the KKK. The internment of Japanese-Americans wasn’t punished. Nixon wasn’t punished. Trump wasn’t punished repeatedly. None of these were the cause of the cesspool, but they all allowed it to endure, to prosper and to grow.
@lonespur Columbus’ cesspool is now an aggressive nuclear power.
@lonespur actively importing high level nazi personnel and installing them in top tier positions/providing safe havens after the war probably didnt help...
@lonespur
false, it was when christopher columbus landed in the americas

@lonespur Yep, been saying this for a very long time.

Course we made the same mistake with the Nazi's at the end of WW2, for the exact same reasons.

This country has way too many people who don't actually align with what are supposed to be "American" values because they are ignorant, hateful people.

@lonespur They really should have crushed the seven states out of existence and nationalised all their assets and land, in perpetuity.
