I saw southern auroras last night!!!! Rakiura! Holy cow that was AMAZING

(View from a bit south of Arthur's Pass, New Zealand)

(Follow up note: it was just barely visible to the naked eye, and just looked totally white with maybe a hint of red. A camera was required to see the colours)
Oh, and here's one from just a few minutes earlier that is full of satellite streaks 😭

@sundogplanets Gosh do I hate satellite reflections. Used photograph in the old days of manually guiding a telescope for two hours or so. A satellite ruins a whole night.

Now, though you can photograph again soon in a minute or two, there are so many more shiny satellites to put up with.

No one ever asked us if we were willing to give up our sky heritage in exchange for the tech benefits.

@sundogplanets ... Ok, so here's an idea: take astro image. Identify each streak (should be easy if timestamp is 1s accurate). Start recording GPU time. Remove streaks. Stop recording CPU time. Calculate GPU hours. Calculate marginal costs. Add overhead (staff, infra, etc). Add two zeros. Charge sat owner for "waste removal services". ?
@sundogplanets Is that the first time you have seen the Australis?

@sundogplanets

So you did see some alien spacecraft!

@sundogplanets
Well, for me those "travelling stars" are just nice little guys, when I sit outside stargazing. So far I know it's childish, but it feels good then.
So those lines in your picture are just greetings from my nighttime friends 😉
Perhaps that helps a bit.
@alikatze @sundogplanets we already have "wandering stars" they're called planets!!!!!!!! https://www.etymonline.com/word/planet
Planet - Etymology, Origin & Meaning

"star other than a fixed star; star revolving in an orbit," from Old French planete… See origin and meaning of planet.

@sundogplanets interesting, I've never looked into it before. Do you need a camera modified for IR or something to see the colors or just long exposure?

@sundogplanets thank you so much for the awesome picture, and the explanation.

Last time we had these lights visible in Switzerland I was very disappointed to see all those nice pictures, but nothing with my eyes.

It took me some time to realize cameras are more sensitive than our eyes, with a loooong exposure.

@sundogplanets

Wowee! Zowee! Did you hear any alien spacecraft or anything like that?

What a beautiful, unearthly display!

@sundogplanets beaetiful coalsack and magellanic clouds
@sundogplanets Those Magellanic clouds look SO absolutely magnificent. I can't express how jealous I am. Please enjoy them on my behalf
@sundogplanets очень сильно захватывает дух 🙏

@sundogplanets

Sky from Birmingham was exceptionally clear tonight (well, for Birmingham, it was). Could see all of Orion's stars.

@sundogplanets amazing. what camera did you use?
@sundogplanets Magnificent! Well captured!
@sundogplanets we never made it south of Arthur's Pass. Such a magical place
@sundogplanets oh wow that looks like the northern lights but upside down!

@sundogplanets

No one wants to tell Sam it's just Lachlan's new LED grow lights.

@sundogplanets I'm so jealous but thrilled for you. Gorgeous.
@sundogplanets Wow! Do they look like northern auroras?
@sundogplanets thisd make for a great desktop wallpaper. it has potential.
@sundogplanets it is cool to see the sky I recognise! The pointers, the coal sack, the cross, the lmc.
Not quite south in Cape Town enough for aurorea.
@sundogplanets So the northern lights are greenish hues. Does anyone know if the northern and southern are different colors?
