@eff We (those of us for privacy and controlling our own business) would get further, I think, if we simultaneously addressed the concerns of (some of?) the people on the other side.
They're desperate to stop the flood of mental sludge choking the web. They're not anti-privacy. But they do provide a socially acceptable screen of "widows and orphans" for the politicos and broligarchs to hide behind.
Pointing out the privacy problems is useful. But how about if there's at least one paragraph talking about how to solve the sludge issue?
A whistleblower (don't remember his name) said recently that (I think it was) Facebook could do a one-click solution to the problem. But he didn't say what. Somebody here or at EFF probably knows what he meant. So mention it! Explain it. Say why it would or wouldn't work.
Mention solutions for pollution that *work with* privacy and own-control. Point out that it's not a fight of either privacy OR crap. If there's a way to have both, point it out.
My wild guess is that the way involves broligarchs modifying their damn products. And that the assumption is that's hopeless. So we all talk about something else. Let's not. There has to be a better choice than either drowning in sludge or living in a constant colonoscopy.
