Rights groups have slammed Pete Hegseth for saying that “no quarter” will be shown to Iran.

"No quarter" includes executing people who've surrendered.

The mere announcement from a govt official can be a war crime.

Such threats are illegal under the Hague Convention & US domestic laws & military manuals.

Hegseth has publicly claimed he would not abide by “stupid rules of engagement”

Analysts say US threat of ‘no quarter’ for Iran violates international law

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said there would be ‘no quarter, no mercy’ as US continues to pummel Iran.

@DrALJONES

I argue that international law is not the issue here. It's one of practicality.

A belligerent that offers medical id and humane treatment of prisoners is more likely to see its own soldiers get the same.

If we are cruel on the battlefield, we will see our own pilots executed by burning in a cage.

@Stinson_108 pretty much this..

on the other hand, traitors burning in cages is probably just peachy

Everyone knows in Trump’s world, if you are captured you're a loser.

ETA - easy to say if you make sure you never see combat.

Re "international law is not the issue here. It's one of practicality."

They're not mutually exclusive. And oughtn't to be if we favour rule of law above fascism

@Stinson_108 @DrALJONES We saw that in Vietnam, the US troops were held to account to the standards and more of the western world. The N Vietnamese were not, they had no such restrictions. Laws are nice if all sides adhere to them.
@A_Minion @Stinson_108 @DrALJONES One soldier served a very short time in prison for the My Lai massacre. Their sentence was commuted I believe. The US did not hold fellow war criminals to account. The Vietnam war was, from beginning to end, a US war crime against the people of Vietnam.
@BLTpizza @A_Minion @Stinson_108 @DrALJONES Lt Calley was the one man imprisoned. I remember it well. A doctor to whom I told the news when I heard it said (and I never forgot these 56 years later) and I quote ‘Our boys would never do such am thing. He was probably 20 or more years molder than me and that’s when I lost a lot of respect for such people.
