Sup: The Universal Mobile Messenger

it's like "what if I had the best mobile messenger" but also "and could hack it to add IRC support" and even "and supports E2EE group chats"

a modular, open source backend with a gorgeous mobile app with deep Pixelfed/Loops/Mastodon integration

#SupSoon

@dansup Looking forward to taking it for a spin. I'm a sucker for E2EE messengers.

@dansup There are, already, very good opensource options in this field. XMPP and Matrix are two great examples. Any reason for building yet another solution what would just throw more fragmentation into this field?

Not a critic or anything like that, I'm not judging your idea, saying that it is bad or it shouldn't be done, please, don't get me wrong. I just want to understand what could make Sup the true platform that will make everyone chatting freely, private and safe.

Wish you a great one :)

I predict a lot of "what's sup?" jokes…

@adam @dansup I mean, it truly is a great name. Very succinct, and I imagine it could easily become a part of people's vocabulary. "I'll send you a sup" instead of "I'll send you a message on WhatsApp".

But at the same time, like @ReeSilva, I wonder if it wouldn't be better to build on existing efforts rather than reinventing the wheel.

@dansup Can you talk to @lain about connecting it with #Pleroma chat? Also, bridging to #XMPP would be really appreciated.

As others noted, we're returning to 1999/2000, when I had to run AIM, MSN chat, Yahoo chat, ICQ, and more just to reach all my contacts. Only GAIM / Pidgin and Trillium aren't the answer this time.

@lnxw37a2 @lain yes, i used to have a soykaf account when lain and me were besties.

those were the days (im jk, he prolly doesnt even remember me)

@lnxw37a2 @lain @dansup

Me, today: Uses only one IM, #Jabber/#XMPP, but with bridges to IRC, SMS, and Matrix 🙂 No need for multi-protocol clients.

@dansup

Can't find a link to the source repo. Where is it?

@dansup Any consideration of supporting #Deltachat and it's federated E2EE group chatmail formats?
