you're a lawyer.

you run gcc without arguments.

it says:

"gcc: fatal error: no input files"

puzzled, you consult the dictionary.

fatal: causing death. leading to failure or disaster.

error: a mistake. the state or condition of being wrong in conduct or judgement.

is starting gcc without arguments equivalent to making a mistake, a wrong action that leads to deadly failure or disaster? did you just kill someone? did you commit a felony? now you are panicking. you turn off the pc.

@lritter @catsalad “illegal operation” and “this incident will be reported” have caused so many completely avoidable panic attacks
@0xabad1dea @lritter @catsalad one of my earliest computers memories was playing a game on my Dad’s work issued Mac Classic when an error happened and it popped a dialog with a bomb icon on it. I was convinced I’d done something terrible and his very expensive computer was about to blow up.
@lritter *executes an illegal instruction*
@lritter this program has performed an illegal operation and will now be shut down
@bimmer *swat team smashes through window*
@lritter Hey this is a world in which us computer geeks will happily talk about killing children, reaping zombies, and terminating rogue processes. What's a little mistaken murder compared to that?!
@lritter And if this was any kind of commercial social network the content of my post just then would have set off about ten billion alarms and ensured I'd be "on the list" of law enforcement in half a dozen jurisdictions!

@losttourist it is my dream to meet real world spooks one day so i can ask them all sorts of questions, so i always make these on purpose

i imagine they'll have me in a room and say smth like "where and when did you *checks notes* break windows?"
and i'll be like "i will answer this question if you answer one for me: do you really have a basement office where you investigate the paranormal?"

@lritter Oh! That's why @neil isn't coding in C!
@lritter they really should just print the help if there's no args
@lritter
"you run gcc without arguments."
Isn't the point of lawyers to argue?

@Hanicef i was expecting you

by which i mean to say i discovered the pun too late
