🚨 BREAKING 🚨

The UK Information Commissioner's Office and Ofcom are pushing for tech companies to strengthen age checks.

It's disastrous that the ICO wants to somehow 'protect children’s data' by compelling 13-18 year olds to use poorly regulated digital identification products that could put their biometric data at risk.

Watchdogs call on big tech to ‘urgently’ do more to protect children online

The regulators accused tech platforms of ‘failing to put children’s safety at the heart of their products’

The Independent

"We need strong regulation of the age verification industry so that Internet users' privacy and security is better protected. Until we have that, the ICO should stop pushing digital identification.”

ORG calls for age assurance industry to be regulated

Open Rights Group has warned of serious privacy and security risks for people in the UK as online platforms start to ask users to verify their age, as required by the Online Safety Act.

Open Rights Group
@openrightsgroup It should have been regulated long before such destructive and tyranical laws were put in place
@openrightsgroup

every time you post an alarmist response to proposed legislation you are admitting to having failed in your 20 year mission to protect digital rights in the uk.

You should be ahead of this, it shouldn’t get to this point.

You didn’t start last week.

If you can’t nip these things early what exactly is the money used for?

👏👏👏

It's easy to find reasons not to do something, or to smear the overused "protect the kids" justification.

But there are very real online harms, to people of all ages and society as a whole. The public demand for action is growing.

So, we need solutions. And without groups like Open Rights offering them, governments will naturally look to techbros.

As a former boss used to say, "if you don't come with a better solution, you're just complaining".

@TCatInReality @openrightsgroup but they aren’t offering anything

They don’t do anything

They use these panics to raise money so they can put on some public farce for the next time to raise money.

Success here isn’t having to fight everyday, do some actual lobbying
@openrightsgroup Yes protect kids online FROM age checks.

No surprise that Starmer, notoriously good friends with of Streeting and Mandelson, wants to know exactly where the 14 year olds are online.
