The internet has an official name for the new #Meta stalker glasses: pervert glasses!

#MarkZuckerberg

@MaryAustinBooks "Creeper Peepers" is much better
@Lazarou @MaryAustinBooks: Less obvious for non-native English speakers.

@xtaran
Iirc they are not available outside of the US

@Lazarou @MaryAustinBooks

@licho @xtaran @MaryAustinBooks I saw one on display in a store in London, it's coming....

...but believe me, I'd rather it didn't!

@licho @xtaran @Lazarou @MaryAustinBooks Can't say I'm surprised but that's a red flag if I ever saw one 🤣
@MaryAustinBooks Once again, thank you to whoever it was I was talking to months back about how we should all, if seeing somebody wearing pervert glasses, point at them and shout "PERVERT GLASSES! PERVERT GLASSES!" continously - no matter where we are; at home, at work, in the street.
@paul @MaryAustinBooks Those look absolutely like the dorkiest thing I've ever seen in addition. Dorky Pervert glasses :p
@sotolf @paul Right? I mean, I'm a weirdo, but I actually talk to people and ask them their names and if they don't want to talk to me I respect that. And that's the difference between my brand of weird and Zuck's.
@MaryAustinBooks @paul I don't even know what they are supposed to do :p It's the side of tech that I don't really think about, I'm still years behind, but I guess it's something similar to the glasshole thing that was going on some years ago.

@sotolf @paul
They can take pictures and video and use facial recognition on people. Zuck's team flouted the law and used them to intimidate jurors in a courtroom.

I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to know much about them. I too used to eagerly read about new tech, but it's all so dystopian now, the fun is gone. I still learn in broad strokes for defensive purposes, but yeesh.

Judge scolds Mark Zuckerberg's team for wearing Meta glasses to social media trial

A Los Angeles judge ordered Meta officials to remove their AI glasses at a trial over the impact of social media on users.

@MaryAustinBooks @sotolf @paul shows my younger self's naivete. I remember 20 years ago being at a family reunion and imagining tech like this to help me remember who's kid that is, etc.

Now I realize:

A. Perverts and dickheads have access to the same tools I dream of (and won't use them for the same ends)
B. Maybe I should try to put the effort in to remember stuff instead of leaning on tech to save me from my own apathy (or lean into it where warranted)

@Xoriff @sotolf @paul
Well, we all need to remember that. But I think the main problem is the tech industry owning the legislators who were supposed to regulate them. We can thank the Roberts SCROTUS for that.

@sotolf @MaryAustinBooks what's worse is whatever gets filmed gets sent to a team somewhere in the world (Kenya I think) where each part of the image is tagged and used for training Meta's slop generator.

There is just so much wrong with these pervert glasses.

@paul @MaryAustinBooks With the people wearing those things those Kenyans will have to look at a lot of butts and chests... Well at least it's something a bit less harrowing than the moderation or chat tasks I've seen foisted upon them before.
@sotolf @paul
Oh yes, both from an exploitation standpoint and a privacy standpoint it's really awful. They have indeed had to watch people using the toilet or having sex.
@MaryAustinBooks @paul From what I've read in articles too they are having to see a lot of fucked up shit, they have been working at kind of a backstop to moderation algorithms, so lots of gang violence/executions and so on, which is enough to make most people really struggle with their mental health.
@sotolf @paul Lord that's bad. Modern day colonialism!
@MaryAustinBooks @paul Yeah, it's horrible, and then they don't get the help they need afterwards, in addition that they are paid way too little, it's such a schemy thing to do, and since they have to sign NDAs, which if broken probably mean that they won't work with any tech stuff, which gives them at least enough to live on.. It's atrocious, As usual, it's the bourgeoisie taking advantage of the proletariat, and not caring because it's not them that have to suffer for their gains.

@paul @MaryAustinBooks

I would walk up to the person and absolutely gush about their Epstein eyewear!

Go ahead and flaunt the fact that they’re recording you, and how obnoxious it is.

I have another suggestion as well. You pull out your phone and and stick the camera in their face and maybe use the flash a couple of times saying I’m gonna doxx you too! It’s SOOO fun!

@paul @MaryAustinBooks oh shaming is nice. i was wondering if the pervert glasses would resolve a QR code on my shirt but this is much more social.

@MaryAustinBooks

Even if you don't use them like a pervert would, someone else working at facebook will.

@Aether_Well @MaryAustinBooks
This is my concern, too. Also, companies that gather info, sometimes sell info.

@Susibryant @Aether_Well
I remember as a school child learning about the first Guilded Age, reading about the contaminated food and medicine and unsafe travel and horrific working conditions, on and on, and thinking, "Oh my God! What would I do?"

And it turns out the answer is "All that and try to make sure I don't accidentally star in someone's porn.")

@MaryAustinBooks Goon Goggles was right there!
@guffo @MaryAustinBooks I've always thought of VR headsets as goon goggles
@nieuemma @MaryAustinBooks Yeah, cranking it while you can't see your surroundings is a dangerous game
@MaryAustinBooks I think they're already dead... first the lady who wouldn't tolerate them on the subway https://futurism.com/future-society/woman-hero-smashing-meta-smart-glasses-subway, and then the news some really unfortunate guys in the back of beyond having to watch and classify video of users going to the toilet has caused them to cross the rainbow bridge.
Woman Hailed as Hero for Smashing Man’s Meta Smart Glasses on Subway

A New York subway rider has accused a woman of breaking his Meta smart glasses. She was later hailed as a hero.

@hopeless Let's hope so! I mean, it wouldn't be Zuck's first swing and a miss with creepy tech nobody wants.
Pedophile Beards

@MaryAustinBooks @alice plus you get to look like famous perv Woody Allen when wearing them!
@bucknam Just what we all aspire to. 💀
@MaryAustinBooks
As stylish as a cybertruck.

@MaryAustinBooks I approve of calling Mark Zuckerberg's Pervert Glasses Mark Zuckerberg's Pervert Glasses.

#Facebook #Meta #techbros

@MaryAustinBooks … brought to you by M.Shmuckenberg
@MaryAustinBooks
Bet Zuckerberg doesn't allow them in his home.
@sasyecat @MaryAustinBooks I thought we called them glassholes?
@BubblegumYeti Wasn't that the term for Google glass, though?

@MaryAustinBooks

Feels a bit like saying "this is kink-shaming", but I certainly wouldn't want to sound like people in India should have to (for lack of opportunities) look at anyone's peepee or equivalent at a minimim wage.

Fuck capitalism.

@MaryAustinBooks pervert glasses are a fitting name, knowing that zuck's idea for fb was to rate the desireability of women 🤢

@MaryAustinBooks
When this type of tech was just getting started, I admit to being excited about it - but not for pervert reasons!

Much of the initial promise was for industrial use (mostly because of cost). We were promised the ability to have wiring diagrams, how-to videos and even tech manuals right in front of our eyes as we worked on equipment. How helpful would that be!

That promise evaporated pretty damn quickly in favor of the pervert market...

@JayElbey @MaryAustinBooks

Yeah, that's the thing! There are so many potentially cool uses of AR, but not at the hands of surveillance capitalist data extractors. I really don't know if it's possible to have a truly useful AR glasses that aren't creepy surveillance wear without radically changing society first.

@MaryAustinBooks I will always use Mark Zuckerberg’s Pervert Glasses to explain them. Branding is important 🥰
A new app alerts you if someone nearby is wearing smart glasses | TechCrunch

A hobbyist developer's new app, which can detect nearby smart glasses, comes amid resistance to always-on recording and listening devices that invade people's privacy.

TechCrunch
@MaryAustinBooks back in the day of Google glasses we used to call the wearers glassholes. I think that term still holds.
@MaryAustinBooks as in ”Zuck off, glasshole.”
@MaryAustinBooks I would like something that reminds me of people's names though 🫣😢
@Robo Hey, that's fair. If there were a product that didn't violate people's privacy or make you look like Woody Allen I'd want it too!
