RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/116205343316077705

i've said this before but i'm gonna say it again: it's *fascinating* watching the software industry rediscover why best practices exist in real time

What the fuck why are people being racist fucks in the replies in here? Gross. Get reported and blocked
I am muting this thread to reclaim my notifications and retain my sanity
@eniko I'm not seeing those. I guess I've to give my props to the admin of my instance.
@eniko This is so similar to how it went with cryptocurrency and the finance sector...
@ainmosni @eniko I swear lots of the same people must be involved somehow

@ainmosni @eniko

Pretty much every sector affected by "move fast and break things" cultists.

@eniko

Yeah. It's a slow motion car crash...

@eniko

"Fascinating" is a really restrained word to use here—congratulations!

@abhayakara i'm a very restrained kind of person
@eniko Almost like boring non-coding things such as requirements gathering, systems analysis, testing, documentation, etc, are actually important.
@V_Mags_Fox @eniko LLM pushers seem to think the coding bits are boring too! The "interesting" parts appear to be coming up with the idea and taking credit for the output of the plagiarism machine.
@eniko When the dust settles there needs to be an accounting of which practices were brought back and which ones were not brought back. We focus a lot on the former and miss the latter.
@eniko is giving "Reinventing the seatbelt"

There’s a story that the British Navy learned how to prevent scurvy and then forgot and had to rediscover it, which was previously harder to believe

@Supervinh47 @eniko

@eniko It's like an inverse NIH syndrome for an entire industry.
@eniko watching people obstinately rebuild technology from first principles as they annihilate stability in extant software is very frustrating
@brad yeah, especially rough when the existing code was already on a "update monthly with security fixes" level of quality, so 'just don't update' also sucks
@eniko AI : software :: cryptocurrency : finance
@eniko Same thing with parents rediscovering the benefits of vaccinations. :-|
@eniko Funny how letting fancy autocomplete deploy to production causes problems ... who woulda thunk?
@GreenSkyOverMe @eniko I tried to edit existing code to fit my needs and was running into issues, since I didn't have any knowledge of SQL. Someone recommended I use AI to create the code. Sure, the AI created code for me, but I, a SQL noob, had to point out syntax errors and what needed to be done instead for it to make sense and do what I wanted it to. I was only reading a database, not writing to it, so the worst that happened was that the script failed. So much could have gone wrong.
@eniko

It'll never last.
Some cost cutter will f1ck it up again soon enough; they always do

Best thing to do is create alternatives; just not so easy to do or persuade moneygrubbers it's cheaper in the long run and likely to keep customers not lose them in droves.
@eniko honestly sort of happy for Amazon to refuse to discover it and eat itself
@eniko bezos or is it bozos could loose his balls. Oh, too late tRump already has them.
@karamazov1879 @eniko I think it's the other way around. Billionaires spend a lot of money at his dinner parties in order to be able to tell him what to do. If he stops doing what he's told, he stops getting million-dollar dinner guests.
@eniko meanwhile today I had a manager explaining we should do exactly this in our company, can't wait for all the gen ai coders to start learning their jobs again in some months
@eniko in the same way that it’s been fascinating watching the cryptocurrency community discover why financial regulations exist.
@eniko @cwebber same way we saw all the cryptocurrency nerds figure out why finance is regulated the way it is.

@eniko u say rediscover but are they actually *learning* anything

the solution in this article doesn't seem to fix the problem but only spread blame more widely when the problem occurs

@mcc @eniko it's very possible they will discover it and proceed to cover up and do absolutely nothing or shift the blame

"they" being any corp ever

@mcc @eniko yeah telling senior engineers they need to spend all their time reading code that nobody could be bothered to write is... well, we'd like to believe that whoever proposed that solution knows exactly what it's going to do to the company's ability to even pretend to function, and did so in the hope of forcing a real decision soon after.

we don't think we do believe that, we just would like to...

@eniko why do they still have junior engineers, aren't those supposed to be redundant with AI
@ratsnakegames @eniko so they have someone to blame
@ratsnakegames @eniko Those are the only ones they're willing to pay for to check the output of GenAI coding.
@eniko Oh look the save time and replace people wonder machine has doubled the time and people needed to make something worse.
@eniko I get a lot of “a good engineer will review the output and do blah” and I’m like that is depending on discipline, as a craft we learned that discipline is not an effective or reliable tool, but is all hanging on that.
I’m baffled
