Take this into account into your risk analysis, people. If you're an activist or journalist investigating the power that be you have a different risk profile.

@BjornW oh my. I was just moving over stuff to Proton. Not a journalist. But. What’s a good alternative these days?

@Mdubbelm I don't have a clear answer. It depends on your risk profile. Who might be interested in your (communication) data?

If your reasons for choosing Proton are to protect yourself from morally impaired cyber criminals, Proton might still be a good solution. If you want to protect yourself from a state-like entity you have a problem & need more help than Proton with it's generic services probably can offer. Now this does not mean that one should continue to use Gmail either....

@BjornW @Mdubbelm
It's not Proton's fault, it's the law. All other providers would've done the same.
If you want to be anonymous, you have to pay wirh cash.
@src_esther
Correct, but there are different jurisdictions around the world. Some could act as a buffer against certain adversaries.
@Mdubbelm
@BjornW @src_esther I think if @Mdubbelm wants a reputable non-bigtech solution, Proton is a good choice if, as normal folks, you do not really have state actors in your threat model. The case Bjorn refers to is remarkable enough to be news and that fact pretty much says everything about the level of protection Proton really offers. So, as a normal user, I would not fret too much over it.
