Friends, Mac users, Mastodonians, lend me your ears: I come not to bury the Studio Display, but to praise it! https://sixcolors.com/post/2026/03/in-defense-of-the-new-studio-display/
In defense of the “new” Studio Display

When Apple announced the “revision” to its Studio Display last week, I—among others—did a bit of a Spock eyebrow raise. That new tag was doing a lot of heavy lifting: aside from a revam…

Of course, I am also the person who still has a 1080p TV in their living room and is plenty happy with it.
@dmoren is there not a Costco nearby? I mean, you just had a kid a few years ago; you joined then for diapers, right?
@Drwave @dmoren Our eyes apparently got tinier, so we ditched a TV cabinet and got a big ol’ 4K LG from Costco for what felt like a laughably low price. I have zero regrets.
@glennf @Drwave Ignorance is bliss! This TV is almost twelve years old and you know what it doesn’t have? Some terrible “OS” janking it up.
@dmoren @Drwave I was worried about the LG. However, I managed to misconfigure it so it can't hit the internet, and I’m shocked at how non-smart it is in a good way. We use it as a dumb display, and it works great. I had a Visio before this and was deeply unhappy with how invasive it could be, data-scavenging aside!
@glennf @dmoren @Drwave As someone who's still using a 14 year old 720p TV, do these fancy smart TVs still work if you don't give them your wifi password?
@waltman @dmoren @Drwave I’m not sure. I thought I *had* to configure it to be online, then I guess I misconfigured it, and, unlike the Vizio, it only balks when I go to its configuration interface and try to do something that requires the internet. Which I can generally do without.

@waltman @glennf @dmoren @Drwave

I’ve never hooked a tv up to the internet.

Instead, I plug in an appletv and a mythtv frontend running on a raspberry pi… hdmi only.

@glennf @dmoren @Drwave I use a pair of LGs for work-I literally haul around 2 48” OLEDs-and they have never been online.

And oh the praise they get for image quality. From directors of photography (who are notably opinionated)

Comically my own tv is not an OLED. those live in the garage to go to set.
