#ScribesAndMakers March 6: How do you choose a title for your book?
I don't choose them so much as they come to me. My current book has only a working title, "The Order," which I find incredibly boring. It needs a better one.
In general, I like it if it's descriptive, evocative, but also mysterious. I want to draw people in.

#ScribesAndMakers March 8: Is there a country other than your own that influences your creativity?'
I'm Canadian, so I'm eye-balls deep in American media, so that's a huge influence, and I'm a lit professor, so multiply Canadian anglophilia by 10; England is a gigantic influence. This is what it's like for us.

#ScribesAndMakers 13 March: Do you read short stories as often as novels?
I teach, so I read a lot of short, medium, and long fiction. There's a difference between what I like and what "teaches well," so my reading experience is often split. If I sense something will work in class, I go down a different path in my head.

#ScribesAndMakers March 15, Is the time you've had for creativity this month what you expected?
Yes.
Sigh.

#ScribesAndMakers March 16: Convincing to read a book you don't care for.
You might not *enjoy* #JekyllAndHyde, but it's such a huge cultural touchstone (for anglophones) that you'd be doing yourself a favour to know how the original actually goes.

#ScribesAndMakers March 17: What’s a creative habit you’ve wanted to adopt but haven’t yet?
Finishing a novel.
Sigh.

#ScribesAndMakers March 18: If your creative work could speak, what would it say about you?
"People who seek power are inherently suspect."

#ScribesAndMakers March 19: How did you feel when you finished your most recent project?
I was literally high for a little bit. It was a rush. It's the first time I'd done it.
I'd been working on a short-story cycle that turned into a novella, and when I wrote the last words, satisfied that I'd nailed the basic shape of it, it realized it now existed in the world. I'd made a thing.
Magic.

Oh, I know where my towel is. And don't you forget it.

#ScribesAndMakers March 25: Do you use music as a storytelling tool?
I really don't. It's almost entirely absent from my writing. Personally, I can never *connect* with "music" in prose form. It's either described abstractly or it's [shudder] lyrics written onto the page. Tolkien couldn't make that work, and I've never seen anyone do better.

#ScribesAndMakers March 26: Do you dance or move along to music when you listen?
Depends on the music, but generally yes.

#ScribesAndMakers March 27: What's a book that made you see the world differently? How?
Lee Maracle's RAVENSONG. It was the first literary fiction I'd read by an Indigenous author who's local to where I live--Maracle is Sto:lo--and it impressed on me just how crushing Canadian colonialism is on the people who are actually from the place where I live.

My day job is "English teacher," so yeah. It's a pretty big influence. ;)

#ScribesAndMakers Mar. 29: Griddle?
I'm a cast-iron-pan guy.
#Writing #Writers #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #AmWriting #Scriberspace
@CMRosens The great thing about cast-iron is that it's just cast iron. The expensive ones, the difference is they're pre-seasoned, but it's quite easy to just cook bacon in your pan a few times in order to get all those good oils cooked into the metal.
If you're vegetarian, a thin layer of seed oil on a low heat for a while, pull it before it gets cold or congeals, then repeat until the metal shines black.
God I love cast iron.
That's a fail. I was picturing a basket of eye balls.
@QuasiTemporal @pentup @orionkidder
We are the dismembered eyeball fringe. - Would that be a bloody eyelash?
*offers a hug*
Truth! It is a great story though, and a good message. Good and evil lives happily side by side inside us all
@TeflonTrout @orionkidder The person who inspired the story, Deacon Brodie sounds like an absolute nightmare of a man. I've read only short summaries of his life; I think I'd prefer to research more about him.
One of the things I've heard was that the young Robert Louis Stevenson woke up one night to see Brodie staring at him from the foot of his bed.
1 large yike, to go please
@TeflonTrout I mean, not *happily*! Jekyll tortures himself about the mildest alleged "sins" that aren't even mentioned in the text. It's like "Victorian England: The Novel!"
(novella)
Was he not happily coinhabited prior to taking the draught? XD
