@wdlindsy Basically all you say is true for the Netherlands also, with the exception of people claiming to be “highly religious”. To the contrary, in the Netherlands Christians are few and mainly elderly, like myself. How can the absence of religion from, or its limited and shallow public coverage have such a different result here?

@Fietsbel The differences are rooted in history, surely. Europe in general has moved away from the close union of church and state, due to the bloodshed that this union caused for centuries in the past. America was founded by people talking about creating a city on a hill, a light for the world, so religion was pushed front and center in our culture from its foundations.

But, in the other hand, your country was a classic immigrants’ country for centuries and received immigrants from all over the globe, with most diverse religious backgrounds. Then it seems at least a bit strange that Christian nationalists became so dominant politically, marginalising all other religious groups.
