@catsalad Will I see you at UNIX EXPO this year?

I hear pink computers and floppy disks are debuting!

#UNIX

@occult Oh heck yeah!

@catsalad I know these were super serious UNIX business magazines back in 1985, but today they would literally be the cover of some punk zine.

@occult @catsalad
As for as styling is concerned, I'd say it'll be on the very badly done 'New Romantic' but I align with your observation.
@MixMistressAlice @catsalad I'll admit I'm not a zine art historian, but I was more warm than cold I hope with my observation.
@occult I saw that same look in Mondo2000.
@occult @catsalad I can't wait to debug Xenix device drivers.
@occult @catsalad The title photo is wild, but what really cracks me up is HP's portable UNIX system in the top left corner. 😁

@occult @catsalad

No. No... NO! I WAS PROMISED!

I DESTROYED THE OLD MAN'S SOUL AND I WOULD NEVER SEE XENIX AGAIN!!! THE *WORLD* WOULD NEVER SEE XENIX AGAIN!!!

The gods have betrayed me and the only solution now is to destroy the gods. No future innocents shall be subjected to the sheer depravity of Xenix.

Nay, I say.

@NuclearOatmeal @occult You thought you could escape.

@catsalad @occult

Man... Our in-house system was AT&T Unix. Spiffy!

The CEO however, kept making deals with folks setting up Xenix, because whatever the inventory processing software sold only ran on Xenix, and guess who they sent out to get these systems up and running?

I hate Xenix.

@NuclearOatmeal @catsalad @occult How much of that was just that the 286 really sucked vs Xenix adding another layer to a shit sandwich?

Also not to be confused with venix - another crappy port of v7 unix to hardware that really shouldn't run it.

@acsawdey @catsalad @occult

I couldn't give you an honest answer. It's been ~40 years since then, and I really didn't have much technical knowledge. I just knew how to run commands *and* I knew how to exit vi, so I knew I rocked.

@NuclearOatmeal @catsalad @occult My prejudice was probably that I'd been spoiled by BSD unix by then so v7 seemed pretty primitive.
@catsalad Nobody ever was able to escape Xenix, since no other terminal had the "DÜ2"-key!
@occult @catsalad did we ever think that hair was serious?
@occult @catsalad Ahh, that 80s styling. So glad it’s gone
@occult @catsalad What's their album called?
@occult @catsalad I did not realise that was based on a true story

@djm62 @occult @catsalad

"et al" ?!?! Unless that person legally changed their name, this is maybe a mistake? It means "and others" in research citations. Why's it on a person?

Edit: oh maybe that's part of the satire. I just read the alt text now.

"University of Texas Instruments" would have given it away, but I couldn't read it until I zoomed in a lot.
@springdiesel lmfao as a long-time Emacs user I feel utterly shook that the name was the first bit that seemed implausible to you 🤓

@djm62

Yeah. I'm definitely not an emacs user, long or short. Probably should have thought Not My Kink and scrolled on.

@springdiesel Not at all! Your reply just hit my funny bone quite hard and made my afternoon 😄
@occult ``Move over fat Mac'' 😂

@occult

This picture suddenly makes all the 1980s cyberpunk TTRPG cover art a whole lot more explicable.

@occult @catsalad This is what waterfall programming looked like in the 80s. Wigs were optional but recommended.
@occult @catsalad that’s just a typical fediverse trans lesbian couple. One works in IT and the other toots photos of moss.
@occult @catsalad or is this what happens when one logs onto mastodon - they were both normal men, then the lesbian rays shot out of the screen and they were transformed!?!

@JoscelynTransient
Damn, I wish I could have been transformed back when I first joined Masto in early 2017, that would have saved me a few years u_u

@occult @catsalad

@koalou @occult @catsalad yeah, HRT is great and all, but I am here for the button for instant transform

@JoscelynTransient
Instant transform would have been great¹ but even just cracking 4+ years earlier would have been nice (bonus point if it came without the impostor syndrome that made me lose an extra year before HRT 🫠)

1: actually, there would be quite a few issues with that, unless it altered reality to update birth certificate and all the documentation based on it. France loves asking for ID card for everything 🙃

@occult @catsalad

@JoscelynTransient @occult @catsalad How long do these rays last, out of idle curiosity and certainly not part of a purchasing decision?

@JoscelynTransient @occult @catsalad You know way, way back when how X would warn you that if you didn't get your monitor settings right it might cause permanent damage?

THIS IS WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT. THE LESBIAN RAYS.

@ra6bit @JoscelynTransient @occult @catsalad ah, this toot is about X11 and not about Twitter!
@gunstick @JoscelynTransient @occult @catsalad Wait there’s an X other than X11!? I bet it’s an awesome open source copy-left kind of thing right?
@ra6bit @gunstick @occult @catsalad oh…oh no…go back to your beautiful slumber sweet princess and look not upon the horrors of our world… 😅
@occult This makes Angelina Jolie's character in Hackers look understated.
@occult @catsalad id just like to interject for a moment. What you referred to as "world" is actually "unix/world" as Ive recently taken to calling it-

@occult @catsalad heh , I’m
That old. I mean my stack of of sparc5 pizza boxes get turned on every so often just for the mems

#unix #sunos #solaris #oldtimegeek #sparc

@occult @catsalad

The thing about the 80s is that you could do literally anything with your hair and it would be plausible and perhaps even conservative compared to things we saw on TV.

Attached: 2 images @[email protected] Agreed. I've gotten elasticsearch error messages without trying to break stuff. But in a crazy HP-UX coincidence I found this 1985 ad while looking for something else today.
