This is an important read about commitment and identity with respect to the work you do. Although not everyone will have underlying illnesses the fallout can be as severe.

Looking back at my academic career I see many parallels in the "costs" mentioned:

- sold my twenties to institutes/labs
- traveled too much
- gave too much of myself away (for free)
- strain on mental health

Today I learned that DeviantArt is blocking VPN access.

Earlier this week, Instagram was blocking it, and now isn't.

Yesterday I couldn't access my online banking without the VPN turned on.

So yeah, I'd say the Online Safety Act is going about as well as any badly thought out government scheme ever is.

Going to put this out there in light of news of other researchers moving, because I think information sharing in our communities is a form of power, but Ashley and I are looking at opportunities outside of the US right now and considering it. I want to signal our openness to it.

Especially for her, as a tenured teaching professor in neurobiology whose entire lab & teaching practice is deeply grounded in equity & increasing success in STEM. Her extraordinary work makes local communities flourish
