I’ve had a humbling week in the studio. After 13 years of #WheelThrowing, I sat down at my wheel on Monday and couldn’t manage to successfully complete a single form. There’s typically a large gap between throwing cycles for me because my decorating process is long, so by the time I get back around to throwing, I’m out of practice. I took it as an opportunity to return to the basics and seek advanced wheel throwing tips. Each day has been better than the last. #pottery

The other factors I didn’t mention that add to my Monday failings: I sliced my finger on Sunday while opening a package and had to wear a latex glove while throwing so as not to reopen the wound. Not ideal.

AND the clay I got from the manufacturer was super stiff. They lost their factory during Hurricane Helene and all they have left was made 2024 and before. It’s like everything that could possibly make the process more challenging came together on the same day 😂

@potterybyosa your hard work will come through in the work. It will be even more interesting.

@potterybyosa the frustration of picking up a guitar and it’s like I never held one or a brush or pencil and all ability to paint and draw has escaped me. Fortunately I’m usually back to normal the next day.

@ted True. Also, the obsession with ease and mastery is strange bc if there were no challenge involved, it would become boring. I always need there to be a sense of challenge or experimentation to keep things interesting for the long haul. Confronting challenges always makes me dig deeper.
@potterybyosa You seek mastery when you are focused on the product, since mastery allows you to make more and better products faster. It's not necessarily a bad thing. But when mastery wanes for a minute I find it's a good reminder that the product isn't the end-all-be-all.
