I’ve had a humbling week in the studio. After 13 years of #WheelThrowing, I sat down at my wheel on Monday and couldn’t manage to successfully complete a single form. There’s typically a large gap between throwing cycles for me because my decorating process is long, so by the time I get back around to throwing, I’m out of practice. I took it as an opportunity to return to the basics and seek advanced wheel throwing tips. Each day has been better than the last. #pottery

A few in-progress photos of "Meema's tulip bowl."

I threw this as one piece, but later learned that the more standard approach for creating pedestal bowls is to throw two separate pieces and attach them together. 🤷🏻

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 20: Meema's tulip bowl.

My grandmother (my Meema) painted a tulip bowl still life when she was 16; her painting now hangs in my home. I was admiring the bowl's shape and thought, "maybe I could make that!"

So here is my Meema's tulip bowl, brought to life.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 15: homage to Na'nízhoozhí.

As a kid I visited my grandmother who lived in Gallup, New Mexico, and she would take me to nearby Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni galleries. I was thinking about the pottery shapes and colors of the artwork from that area as I worked on this vase.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 8: layers of blue.

I had a several month break in taking pottery classes, and was worried that I would lose the knowledge I had built – but to my relief I picked things up quickly again when I recommenced classes. ☺️

One thing I particularly love about pottery is the trimming process (see https://www.lakesidepottery.com/Pages/Pottery-tips/Trimming-a-pot-Lakeside-Pottery-Tutorial.htm ), and I enjoy carving layers and textures as part of that process.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 7: ruffled.

This was the first large-ish pot I made on the wheel. Someone put a dent in the edge, so I decided to go along with it and created a ruffled edge.
