The incredibly longevity of Half-Life for mods and Quake for custom maps always makes me think how cool it would be to have a generic Godot FPS template and low-fidelity asset library.
I think it would lower the barrier of entry massively when people can just download one package and start making maps right away, and then later get deeper into the weeds to add more mechanics and custom assets once ideas get more ambitious.

@yora what if I told you that we can have low cost assets that are not low fidelity? (And , no I don't mean slop generation, I mean a smart, artist-friendly powerful 3D workflow / asset pipeline based on 100% libre software ofc.)
See @liblast !

@unfa Sure, you can.

But when you start with high-fidelity assets, than any custom assets need to be made in matching high-fidelity. Which raises the barrier of entry for people to start adding their own custom assets to expand their own game.

Which is also the reason why I think FPSs like Half-Life and Quake are popular: It's a form of game that has very simple gameplay mechanics.

@yora Look at Half-Life 2 - the cost of creating assets that fit the style is higher but still very much within reach of the community. I think the technology progressed so that we can have things looking nicer than Quake - closer to Half-Life 2 (albeit in different ways). In April I'm going to be doing a live presentation and workshop about my take on this on #LibreGraphicsMeeting. I do agree that we do need an open game to become a platform for creativity, but using FOSS for asset production.
@yora I say this because we do have a few open source games that still use proprietary software for asset production. And also because there are platforms for creativity which are very much proprietary platforms like Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft. With Quake and Half-Life being blessed by publishers accepting of the modding communities, the core assets are still proprietary. #LibreQuake is an answer, but I think we can do something truly original. I certainly have ideas in this area...
