I've been doing weekly calls with someone in Taiwan to practice my Mandarin and essentially the theme is "Allan shows what's up in Chicago on Sunday Mornings" like diners, markets, etc. One amusing thing was my explaining how gasoline prices are not just impacted by state taxes, but are set by a gas station owner and it can depend on a myriad of things like proximity to the highway, city vs rural, etc. In Taiwan gas prices are pretty consistent throughout the country.
The person has decided that i should practice ㄅㄆㄇㄈ because it's simply faster lol. But to be fair my use if pinyin is pretty much a conversion of zhuyin
A lot of my answers to questions about the US is "depends on the state"
So essentially what I've been doing is picking a different part of the area to be at and then talk about it. So i talked about the shamrock shuffle, then talked about st Patty's at chicago, then attempted to explain BORG. This lead to talking about festivals like Lollapalooza (described AXE BODY SPRAY) and Riot Fest then "I like Sunset Rollercoaster" turned to me going into a dive into "well i guess if you like sunset rollercoaster you may like..."

I introduced friend in taiwan to 7 eleven in Chicago. "Wow this is sad" was the response. "This is it?" when i showed the fridge.

"Are there more 7 elevens or family marts in the US?"

... oh you poor child.

@grumpasaurus

yeah, we get short-changed on a lot in this so-called 'greatest country' lmfao

@rustoleumlove to be fair we have like "fancy grocery stores" but it really isn't the same at all. In Chicago a place called Doms (same doma as dominicks in chicsgo) tried to be like that but it didn't work out.
@grumpasaurus @rustoleumlove Too bad about Doms. And I’m still mad at Kroger’s for ruining Mariano’s after they bought it.

@terrigarland @rustoleumlove I have an astronomically absurd amount of bloody Mary seasoning mix and turkey brine seasoning because of the Dom's foxtrot fall out.

It's a pretty silly story.

@terrigarland @rustoleumlove speaking of which, I should smoke some turkey drums this week
@grumpasaurus @rustoleumlove You were planning a very festive Thanksgiving?
@terrigarland @rustoleumlove no so remember how a lot of the storefronts were closed and the inventory was just sitting in there for a really long time? The Dom's location in Old Town was clearing stuff out and they told a a non-profit that I volunteer for that. If they can clear out the store they can have it. So after calling in a lot of favors and renting a couple U-Hauls we moved everything to someone's garage and sorted things out into care packages and there was still a lot of stuff that we felt wouldn't get used and amongst them was just boxes and boxes of seasoning and capers. Also sesame oil.
@grumpasaurus @rustoleumlove That is a great story! And yeah, I wouldn’t want the capers either.
@grumpasaurus I've heard from the "Abroad in Japan" YouTube channel that Family Mart Chicken is to die for. 😆
@chris i mean it's fine but i mean it's SO CONVENIENT and NOT BAD.
@grumpasaurus 4 day lolla passes are already sold out, we are too old for that shit but it may be a good time with the number of artists #monsters of rock iran tour
