I know, I'm years late. But i finally got around redoing my website with a static site generator (hugo). And I'm impressed by the whole approach.

@festal any good tips or references that helped you mastering #hugo. I, too, want to revive my website but everyday forget to take the first step

@xota The most difficult part, for me, was the css, which is the main way to design the pages, since markdown is very limited. Since I know so little css, I had to rely on AI to help me, but that was simple and very reliable.

So, try to find good working template and then start to make tweaks to suit your needs.

And then start. You can run everything within a self-contained folder which makes it easy to simply try things out.

@festal @xota I had a similar issue recently. I had to migrate an old website based on Contao to Hugo. Most was the scraping to get all sites as markdown. The actual frontend stuff was rather quick.
Is your old site still available? It is typically a good starting point to take it as a boiler plate.
@festal Looks great! Very speedy and satisfying to browse.

Nice! If you ever get bored and/or adventurous I have a growing collection of alternative static site generators.

I wouldn't really recommend anyone pivoting to anything on that list. It's just that I really loved seing websites being treated as documents in their own accords, and not just html as the unprefereable but mandatory end-product of a publishing process.

@thgie @festal Thank you for posting this list! It's something to bookmark for sure, beyond being perfect for serendipitous exploration. For example I stumbled on Soupault HTML manipulation system and it looks fascinating for many use cases. Plus the Dadaist references made my day ! https://soupault.net/ #smallweb #staticsitegenerator
soupault

Yes! Soupault is wicked and high on my list for future deep dives (whenever that might be). You might like to know how the account hosting the source code for Soupault is called.

@thgie @festal After all, what is computer science but good ol' #pataphysics ?

@thgie Nice list. I was going to suggest adding Web Origami but you've already got it!

Lmk if you'd be interested in a demo or a discussion of static sites. I'm always interested in incorporating new perspectives into the project.

I wish I'd remember where I picked up on Web Origami. And I wish I'd sometimes find the time to engage more with the topic of these SSGs. I truely believe that they are important for the internet ecosystem. Your suggestion on demos and exchanges sounds lovely. I could imagine enjoying and forstering such a thing happening, but maybe not right now 🥲
