If somebody wants to make cellular modem kill switches for autos this is a great reason.

Most autos that have cellular and bluetooth hookups use a module. That is because of the costs of testing and licensing a circuit board for every revision if it has the radio hardware on board. Same thing is done in laptops and computers for their WIFI/Bluetooth hardware.

The module either needs to electrically cut the data lines. Fun bit. This could be done only while the car is in motion, and maintained for a set period of time after motion stops. Smart filtering may be needed if GPS data goes over the same data lines.

@Eka_FOOF_A the Problem is that every car sold ib the #EU since 2017 has that #Surbeillance bullshit under false pretenses aka. #eCall preinstalled.

  • And it's mandatory.

Which is why I can't and won't drive any new car!!!

@kkarhan
Sounds like a mandatory tracking system. Cellular modems and phones ping near by towers when they detect a new tower. This is for faster routing of calls to the phone. It also leaves a series of breadcrumbs for where you have traveled. This would all be handled on the cellular modem card. In fact it is handled by the cellular interface processor.

Smart filtering could allow data transmission for accident reporting if there is a sudden physical jolt.

@Eka_FOOF_A except #eXall is done under the #FalsePretense if an #EmergencyCalling system yet uses #GSM and derivative standards instead of like #TETRA-#DMO or similar protected, longer-range bands or eve #CB-Radio.

  • Worst part: Since it's "mandatory safety equipment" disabling it makes the vehicle illegal to drive in #Germany!

@kkarhan
This is what smart filtering is for. The filter processor only allows packets needed for implementing it while the car is in motion. Packets for updates and control are dropped. Yeah, gets a lot harder to implement, but still possible.

It should be possible for all the accident reporting system's functions to be done on an isolated cellular modem/GPS/accelerometer module. It should be possible to make that and use it to replace the disabled one. That would mostly break VIN# tie.

@kkarhan
Note: Here in the US you don't need a SIM to make an emergency call. Will a module that doesn't have a SIM do the cell tower pinging? It that the same in the EU?

@Eka_FOOF_A nope, in #Germany Emergency Calls require a #SIM (or #eSIM, most of them have that soldered down!) and any tampering with #eCall is voiding it's certification and vehicle safety, thus making it illegal to drive.

  • Cars may even actively prevent driving/fail to move if it can't communicate with it and gets a clean status, which may even include any connectivity checks.
    • So unless you were to reverse-engineer the original, per-vehicle unique eCall modem and do constant #replay attacks against the internal network, you may end up with a #bricked car.

Oh and they may even have all components serialized and encrypted like an #Xbox360 and it's optical drive!

See now why I drive a 2007 Corsa D?
