BREAKING: A US court has just sided with fossil fuel pipeline giant Energy Transfer and ordered Greenpeace International and Greenpeace entities in the US to pay them US$ 345 million.

This is a billionaire-backed attack on the right to protest. A thread ⤵️🧵

2/7
This case was never about justice. It was about silencing protest and crushing solidarity.
3/7
Energy Transfer has pursued this intimidation lawsuit because Greenpeace USA and Greenpeace International dared to show solidarity with Indigenous environmental defenders who oppose the climate-wrecking Dakota Access Pipeline.

4/7
US$ 345 million.

That’s what Greenpeace International and Greenpeace entities in the US have been ordered to pay.

It’s the biggest damage award ever imposed on Greenpeace organisations. It’s meant to shut the movement up.

5/7
Let’s be clear: this type of corporate bullying is designed to rob us of our rights and freedoms.

Across the world, those who speak out are facing corporate intimidation – all so billionaires and corporations can keep getting richer while the planet burns.

6/7
This is not over!

All Greenpeace entities involved will appeal this ruling in the US.

And Greenpeace International is already taking Energy Transfer to court in the Netherlands under the EU’s anti-SLAPP directive.

7/7 We will keep resisting billionaires, corporate bullies and polluters.

Fight the billionaire takeover and corporate intimidation - Greenpeace International

Billionaires and corporations are tightening their grip on our democracies — and silencing dissent. They weaken protections for people and the planet, bankroll politicians who serve their interests, control media narratives, and use corporate intimidation to shut down free speech. It’s time to fight back!

Greenpeace International

Ich hab gerade unterschrieben. Selbstverständlich.

Und ihr so???????

@greenpeace
Thank you for your action!

@greenpeace Refuse to pay, don't incorporate in the US anymore.

A self-respecting progressive movement should not treat those deranged fascists seriously.

@ariarhythmic @greenpeace exactly, if Google can just choose not to pay it's fines from the EU, Greenpeace can do the same
@greenpeace that’s ridiculous. I hope you win on appeal.

@greenpeace The US is the definition of "corruption" in the dictionary

We really should recycle that country, or what's left of it..

@stux @greenpeace

reduce (or eliminate) - white nationalism/nazis, capitalism, “free market” economics

reuse - technological/medical knowledge & advancements, “we the people” part of the constitution (maybe some other parts, it wasn’t a totally bad document)

recycle (upcycle) - protest spirit, resistance culture, free speech, to create a new, liberal & democratic constitution that makes reparations for slavery (the first sin - edit: +indigenous genocide), corruption, crimes against humanity

@Meznor @stux @greenpeace

I'm an American who fully supports what you just wrote.

@greenpeace Pay nothing, declare bankruptcy, regroup, repeat? It works for the Worms of Wall Street
@ulfr @greenpeace
That is exactly what I thought!
@greenpeace Don't give them a cent.

@greenpeace

Transfer all assets out of the US. An appeals depends on a fair judicial system. They don't have anything close to that.

Sounds a bit like the McLibel case [3], which was against a tiny handful of activists whose group was called #LondonGreenpeace [4], completely unrelated to Greenpeace International. The final result was formally a half-win half-loss for #McDonalds, but effectively a huge reputation loss for McDonalds, whose ability to crush dissent was greatly weakened.

> McDonald's said the pair could criticise McDonald's privately to friends but must cease talking to the media or distributing leaflets. Steel and Morris wrote a letter in response saying they would agree to the terms if McDonald's ceased advertising its products and instead only recommended the restaurant privately to friends.

This is pretty funny

@gbargoud @boud @greenpeace I would take issue with calling those places restaurants. Even canteens is aiming high. There are many roadside 'greasy spoons' offering better food.

Not calling for violence, just storm them letting them know we don't stand for injustice.

@greenpeace is this on top of the previous $667M claim, or in place of it?
@greenpeace but but but think of the poor "protestors" in Iran... Definitely not paid by CIA & Mosad, but hey look at all these greenie and anti ICE protesters, all paid up by the Antifa.
@greenpeace They'll have no doubt set aside some funds to make a new series of LANDMAN!
