oh yeah stoat/revolt is worse compared to when i used it last time many months ago.

they removed the things that made it somewhat stand out compared to discord like actual builtin theming support and markup in bios... so it's literally just a 1-1 discord clone.. also the new gui sucks

A #Pleroma server supports sync or async chat as well as Mastodon type posting with lower hardware requirements. I'm not sure if a particular front-end is required to enable chat, but it works for me in my Soapbox fork.
