No. 31 in my photo collection of signs of unique Spanish-language business names ending in –ería: TAPICERÍA
The Spanish word "tapiz" means "tapestry, wall-hanging, carpet" and closely related is the word "tapizado" which means "upholstery."
The word "tapicería" is a synonym of "tapizado" but in an expanded way, indicating not only the upholstery fabric itself, but also the art of upholstery and the shop where the upholsterer works and/or upholstery is sold, like this business in Lima.
Why isn't it spelled "tapizería"? Well, the short answer is that Spanish orthographic rules don't allow a Z to be followed by E or I, so the Z must change to a C, like it does in tapicería.
