πŸŽ‰ Big Tech alternatives are finally getting mainstream media attention! πŸŽ‰

Yesterday, The Guardian published a piece on how people and organizations can leave Big Tech behind and choose ethical, privacy-focused alternatives, a topic we’ve been passionate about at Tuta for a long time. πŸ™ŒπŸ”

Thank-you to Steve Rose for mentioning Tuta. It’s great to see privacy-first solutions getting recognition. πŸ™

@Tutanota A shame they forget to mention the fediverse :\ And AI? Best alternative must be HI ;)
@anderslund Hopefully next time!

@Tutanota @anderslund

Commenting on social medias is nice.

But over the years, I noticed that whenever you write to a journalist, they very often reply. They do read their emails and they notice.

When you read a piece about leaving big tech, you have someone interested in the topic. It is someone to write to about the Fediverse. This journalist will then look it up and it might come up in a next piece.

@Tutanota I would really like to use Fairphone...but not for almost 600 euros...just way too much :(
@brainsuxx666
Can't deny the upfront cost, but easy repairs and a 5-year warranty is all about taking a different, more long term approach.
(My first #Fairphone ran as my only smartphone for almost 9 years until the 3G network was axed. Only cost along the way was a spare battery for €20.)
@brainsuxx666 @Tutanota the French and UK phones seem interesting but part of the need is 2x SIM + miniSD card. Low cost Chinese phones can manage this. Android free would assist the choice too due to #googleshenangins and Android #enshitification
@brainsuxx666 I guess you'll likely find it still too much, but anyway: The standard price recently dropped to 550 € and first-time buyers can always get another 50 € off (through a referral code from a "Keep Club" member – me, friends, strangers). /u
@WeAreFairphone I could spend about 300 on a phone :) Lets make a deal xd
@Tutanota β€žBerlin-based Tutaβ€œ i thought you are from Hannover?
@unhitched We are! They got it wrong.

@Tutanota Good to see more reasons to unsubscribe from those companies who are funding US fascism. And some very viable options to those companies who are contributing to our demise.

@Tutanota I think it's great that, finally, privacy oriented alternatives are getting the attention they deserve. But this must become a principle to defend on itself, because it took the tech bros political marriage to Trump in order to change minds. When these tech bros were still large donors to the democratic party, privacy and digital rights were widely derided or even frowned upon. So hopefully we learn from this, and start taking a longer term position on our digital rights.

@Tutanota

It doesn't mention search engines at all which I consider one of the most invidious big tech tools - tracking, biasing, advertising …

@gwentlarry @Tutanota the article starts with search and recommends Ecosia. But @kagihq is better.
@Tutanota it's a dead end when people are already addicted to being dumb
@Tutanota the comment that any Android phone can be converted using /e is a lie. There are a huge number of pretty good phones with no such image available. My BOLD N4 is one example. $250 USD with features commonly found only on $1000 USD android phones. We need Android phones that gain the economy of scale to offer that kind of value. (I would be willing to pay twice as much for the same phone if it came with Linux.)
@Tutanota great news! and perfect with our Big Tech Walkout full programme. Check it out here:

European Alternatives
@Tutanota It's a good article, and it's prompted me to join Mastodon. Already using LibreOffice and Proton. Browser is currently Firefox, but seriously considering Vivaldi. Keen to support a European IT infrastructure πŸ™‚
