After over a decade of making webcomics, we’ve learned a thing or two.

One: people love to read funny stuff for free on the internet.
Two: You have to peddle your wares sometimes, even if it feels weird.

We post our comics for free but also have to make a living. That's where Patreon helps: Supporters get early comics, BTS content, and the satisfaction of knowing they're keeping us just functional enough to continue drawing instead of getting real jobs.

I'm sure the guy behind this one is fine with letting aliens get the credit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bent_Pyramid

@typhon @warandpeas

That one's fun because it's far enough that tourists don't go but close enough to get to easily from Cairo so it was always empty and the one we would take visitors to to avoid the lines

@warandpeas Is that... is that... is that the world's first tetrahedral building?

@warandpeas I always find it quiet descriptive for people, that it seams more plausible for them that literal aliens came from light years away did something and than just disappeared, than humans just could have solved problems by themselves like thousands of years prior to AI...

Come on man. That's what humans do. We solve problems and built stuff. Just because you don't know how to do something doesn't mean anyone before you couldn't done it either.

@feyter

Exactly this. I have thought the same thing as well. People dunnit, like we’ve always dunnit. It has always bewildered me why modern people think that past people didn’t also have their scholars, engineers, scientists and other professionals like we do now.

Humans as we know it are over 250,000 years old. We’ve had a lot of time to think about stuff.

However, I believe that the problem is largely due to adopting Eurocentric schools of thought in Western schools. It shows how arrogant and ignorant European culture actually is about the rest of the world. Europeans spread out around the world and essentially learned nothing. They largely think that since they didn’t build it, that they have to reach out to some other galaxy because surely those Black and Brown people over there in loincloths don’t have the intelligence to invent those kinds of things. Black and Brown people most certainly built those things since they existed 200,000 years before Europeans ever existed. 200,000 years gives a genetically curious mammal a lot of time to tinker with stuff.

It really speaks to Eurocentric thought about how little they think of people who aren’t white.

@eve @Mastodon Year, I really want to say, that this is not the thinking of the typically (white western) European anymore... But with all the stuff currently happening here right now, I actually don't know anymore.

@feyter

I don’t know what the mindset is of Europeans actually in Europe since I don’t live there, but in the United States it’s most definitely what white people over here think. It’s their primary directive and most live and will die on that sword by it.

@eve Same. Moreover, Europe is Western-centric: France, England, Germany. I'm from Poland, and in history we learn about the Carolingians and William the Conqueror. And what about the history of Central and Eastern Europe?

Fun fact: Russian isn't spoken in this part of Europe (Polish in Poland, Czech in the Czech Republic, etc.), and Ivan is a rare name. Not like in American or French movies. We don't drive old Trabants and live in shacks.

And contrary to what English nationalists say, we don't eat swans.

@warandpeas which is more believable? That aliens came to Earth, stacked up the most primitive material they could find, into initially poor but eventually adequate if functionally useless structures? And then removed all other signs of their presence?

Or that brown people built it?

@warandpeas Europeans and Americans would rather believe that the pyramids were built by aliens than admit that they were built by black people.
@warandpeas this is a real issue with non-white history that many people have spoken about.
@warandpeas but like, that's quite a good compliment actually (albeit being a scary and sad one) — when a modern, 4000-year older civilization cannot believe that you've built this
@warandpeas Megalithic structures in France and Ireland were built by people who had no written language, and no one ever has – they are aliens. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalith
