It’s officially been over 3 years since I’ve started on Mastodon. Rather then talk about what’s so great I figured I’d just list stuff I haven’t seen:

- I haven’t had any posts from people I don’t follow

- I haven’t been served ads for items I’ve spoke about near my phone or for that matter any ads at all

- I haven’t been served random articles similar to one article I clicked on out of curiosity like two years ago

- I haven’t been asked to upgrade or subscribe to anything

- I haven’t had AI shoved down my throat or have had AI slop dumped on me.

- I do not have bot accounts randomly messaging me

It’s better here and I don’t know why anyone would go anywhere else ..

#mastodon #socialmedia #meow

@64bithero the no ads part needs to be shouted from rooftops.
@64bithero Mostly the same, but I do get bot accounts randomly following me. Mostly Palestinian "refugee" begging accounts that are VERY unlikely to be real.
@rbos I forget about the bot followers, never get messages though

@64bithero

A better web is possible. We just have to build it for ourselves.

Thank you to @Gargron and all instance admins and everyone writing code in the service of human dignity.

@64bithero I subscribe to tags of my interest and I get posts from people I don't follow.
@bonkers I don’t use tags very much

@bonkers @64bithero Yes, but that's your choice. You can unsubscribe.

Or, if for every 99 interesting posts you see in a hashtag you get one annoying or offensive post, you can just block that account.

@64bithero there are quite some large accounts on Bluesky and potentially Twitter I would want to follow through mastodon. Cross posting happened for a while, but less and less. Bluesky is not only a platform but also a protocol to compete with.
@duffelicious I’ve been encouraging as many Bluesky users to follow bridge accounts or set one up. Maybe one day they will just join the promise land
@64bithero
- I have (retoots from people I follow)
- me neither
- me neither
- me neither
- me neither
- I have… I think they’re gone now
@mysturji I get retoots too but it’s hardly stuff I hate. Mostly stuff I’d boost myself. Maybe I’m just lucky
@mysturji @64bithero If someone I follow retoots I either turn off seeing them or if they are interesting I move all of their toots/retoots to a list. That way it doesn't flood my timeline.
@64bithero just like the earlier internet. Real people posting real things 🄰
@keremgoart it’s a wonderful thing
@64bithero It's like Usenet before Canter & Siegel.
@hteasley Mastodon for those who used in the internet in 1998

@hteasley @64bithero

Ah. Simpler days.

Also those olden times when you could email other sysadmins about suspicious activity, with evidence, and you would get a response.

@64bithero I have to point out that some people receive serious, life-degrading abuse, and server admins can have a hard time keeping things sane. Still, it is better here for most people than anywhere else. Great that you point up the positives!
@khleedril Mastodon isnt perfect. Bad people do bad things anywhere. We take those situations one by one and handle them. Together we can make Mastodon a safe space for all

@khleedril @64bithero Always a risk when humans are involved, unfortunately.

But we do have more control here than other social media platforms. Imagine if, when Musk bought Twitter, we could have decided that we liked the platform and switched to an instance with a better moderator?

To those who have suffered abuse: report and block widely; switch to a better instance; and you are welcome to mention me. I'm not an Admin or moderator, but I'll do whatever I can to help.

@64bithero I“m pretty sure a pair of bots are following me, but I don“t want to hurt their feelings and block them in case I“m wrong.

@64bithero I've been here a long time and have been followed by a few bots...

Which appeared in my Notifications....

And which I could easily block.

Having control of my experience is so cool!

@64bithero

I’ve been here about the same time, and I wholeheartedly concur.

@64bithero remember to tip your admin!
@64bithero How is your experience in finding interesting people to follow or chat with? I find it quite a bit more cumbersome than the twitters from a decade ago.
@64bithero also it's good cause there's no "content creators" we are not falling for that capitalist framing. We are musicians and artists and people who make things and maybe share them collectively as a community. Profit motive doesn't drive us or help humanity, sharing art and music and ideas does. People who call themselves and what they make "content" are what we are on the fediverse to escape.

@ailurocrat from what I understand that’s been the group least happy with Mastodon. And for the most part I’m happy they aren’t here. However there are many I would like to see on here. Ones I don’t consider garbage. And there can be no denying places like BlueSky took off because ā€œinfluencersā€/Celeberties are using it.

And without them growth here will be slow.

@64bithero celebrities are what we try to avoid. influencers are trash. The whole concept of "personal brand" is gross and elitist and letting capitalism erode community sharing and communication in favor of marketability which is the opposite of what the fediverse is about.
