The Venn diagram of "taxation is theft" guys and "why are the roads so shit" guys is a circle
@Daojoan The first thing that shocked me when I went to the US for the first time was how shitty roads were. I mean, this was the richest country in the world, it should have the best roads in the world, and not the shittiest I had been on (I had only been in Europe until then)... Then, I heard Americans talking about taxes and I understood why roads were so shitty. (and why school was not free, and why you'd go bankrupt if you got surgery and so on)
@Daojoan Also, that stuff isn't discussed along fundamental rights or such but "spending *your* taxes"...

@Daojoan Here in the UK, because of the stranglehold the national government has on local council budgets, local roads tend to be shit. The local councils are responsible for fixing some roads, but don't have the funds to do so.

My point is, taxes aren't allocated effectively here, and that's probably true for a lot of other places around the world.

So I'm quite happy to pay my taxes, and say the roads are shit, with no hypocrisy.

@shaungriffith @Daojoan Why are you happy to pay taxes if the government is not providing proper services in return?

Here in India we have taxes like Sweden but services like Somalia. Sure feels like theft to us.

@Daojoan People would be happy to pay if the government were actually using the money to fix roads, provide education, housing, healthcare and so on.

Instead they bomb other countries, hire thugs (cops) to terrorise people in the streets, and protect pedophiles. Yay taxes!

@Daojoan "self-sufficient" type when they need a snow plow
@Daojoan There is also much to be said for "Why are the roads so shit and taxes so high" and "I want to live far far from everyone, but still enjoy the amenities of a dense city, such as water, power, paved roads, sewage"
