Trump wants to deploy a hospital ship to Greenland alleging people aren't receiving care

President Donald Trump has said the U.S. was sending a hospital ship to Greenland because people there are not getting care, but the claim faces pushback. He said in a Truth Social post Saturday that the ship was already on the way, though at the time he posted, the two U.S. ships appeared to be docking in Alabama. Publicly available ship tracking data shows that on Tuesday one of the ships, the USNS Mercy, went out to sea. It's not clear from the public data where the ship is headed, and Pentagon officials didn't comment when asked about its destination. The leaders of Greenland and Denmark have defended their health care system in response to Trump's allegations.

#Trump said in a post Saturday that he would deploy a “hospital” ship to #Greenland, alleging many people there are sick & not receiving care, even though both of the #US Navy’s hospital ships are undergoing maintenance at a shipyard in Alabama.
The announcement prompted a defense of Greenland’s #healthcare system from its prime minister in the latest point of friction with Trump, who has frequently talked about seizing Greenland, which is a semiautonomous territory of #NATO ally #Denmark.

Referring to his “special envoy” to the Arctic territory, #Trump said, “Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, & not being taken care of there.”

FACTS: There have been NO reports of major illnesses in #Greenland lately & it was not clear which sickness Trump was referring to.

All of #Greenland, which has a population of around 57,000 people, is served by the Queen Ingrid Hospital in the capital Nuuk, acc/to the Danish Medical Journal. The territory also has several regional #health centers.

Most #healthcare services in Greenland are #free for citizens & permanent residents. This includes treatment by general practitioners, medical specialists & hospitals, health centers, prescription medicine, public dental care & home nursing care….

In response to Trump’s post, #Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen stressed the region’s #free #healthcare system & pointed out the differences in a gibe at the [crazy expensive] #US system.
“We have a public health care system where treatment is free for citizens. That is a deliberate choice—& a fundamental part of our society,” Nielsen said. “That is not how it works in the USA, where it costs money to see a doctor.”

@Nonilex tbf, the public health care system in Greenland has its challenges. The most pressing issue is personnel. Many Danish health care professionals spend a period of time up there. On one hand to assist and support; but it is also a welcome extra earning. They do get an extraordinary payout to take on the hardship of working under arctic conditions.

@Nonilex

and the hospital in Nuuk is were a US submariner was medically evacuated to the day before the hospital ship announcement.

@Nonilex So, if Trump and the governor of Louisiana are sending medical help to Greenland (which has more or less free medical care), does that mean that everyone in Louisiana has access to affordable health care?

@Nonilex

"FACTS: There have been NO reports of major illnesses in #Greenland lately & it was not clear which sickness Trump was referring to."

I knew I should have bookmarked it, but one credible plotline I read went something like:

1) a legitimate #DanishHealthCare representative

2) citing a shortage of #DentalCare

3) in three (3) #SmallVillages on #Greenland

4) all of which was reported on ... wait for it ... #Facebook

Make of that what you will, but it sounds like enough to set off #Trump

@Nonilex As of yesterday, USNS Mercy was tied up at the pier in Mobile, Alabama.

As of 4 hours ago, USNS Mercy was being pushed off by some tugs and headed into the Gulf.

Two hours later, she turned off her AIS transponder, so her latest position is unknown, but likely either headed southeast to round Key West or south towards the Panama canal.

@Nonilex Why would the Governor of Louisiana be involved in deployment of a US NAVY ship. Am I missing something here?

> Most health care services in Greenland are free for citizens and permanent residents. This includes treatment by general practitioners, medical specialists and hospitals, health centers, prescription medicine, public dental care and home nursing care

Then they have a better deal than us in the southern parts of the realm ;)
We get some of prescription medicine and dental care payed, but it can be very expensive. For most people not going bankrupt expensive, but certainly not free.
