Adolf Hitler's rise to power was marked by early warning signs that went ignored. Politicians dismissed the alarm bells and institutions believed the system would restrain what was coming. History shows clearly just how wrong those assumptions were. Now, as Trump and MAGA test the limits of our democracy, history is beginning to rhyme. https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/perfect-storm-trump-nazi-germany
U.S. Should Learn Lesson From Rise Of Nazis In Germany

When warnings are everywhere, and still no one moves

The Big Picture
@georgetakei then stop paving the way for them with electoralist corporate news. the entire political class is deeply complicit. no matter how watered down, you already have blood on your hands
@georgetakei Uncle George, the rhyme has been a canticle in time. It's in our DNA. Thankfully, I have more going on in my DNA...a change.

@georgetakei this should be required reading for everyone who thinks "just wait for the midterm elections".

You can't just "vote harder". That is far too little, far too late. Despite what polls say the Victory of the Sane is far from inevitable, much less if they can affect change of they do win.

The guardrails have collapsed and the postwar world order of soft power and "rule of law" has ruptured. The US is *already* led by a fascist regime operating by "rule of might". Everyone must act accordingly.

@georgetakei The only bad thing about the article that it speaks about months, when it had been closer to weeks. It took only 6 weeks from Hitler getting appointed (not elected!) as chancellor to the first murders in Dachau concentration camp. And merely days, until the military was instructed to prepare for war.

Maybe it proves that Trump lacks the focus and drive of Hitler. But they share the same evil.

@urwumpe @georgetakei

Fully correct and I have the feeling that only few people know how incredibly fast the takeover was.

@mad @georgetakei Yes, also they underestimate how strong the opposition against Hitler was before he controlled the government. Just a week before, there were hundred thousands of protesters on the streets. Afterwards, the people got arrested before they could organize, only the big churches remained a small threat.

@urwumpe

If I would not have seen it in a historical reportage, I would not have believed it.

@georgetakei It is the same as self-interest, fear, lickspittleness and willful blindness allow people to ignore what the coming despot has clearly stated and indicated (by the way I think I invented a new word)

@georgetakei

How can the US learn if they are salivating with lust to become 1930's Germany? answer, they won't and they don't.

@JimEMichaels @georgetakei You don't think, it's the other way around ??

@georgetakei

Too bad it's on Substack. Many won't read it for that reason. Substack welcomes Nazis, so there's some irony going on here.

@Bette @georgetakei one of the reasons Hitler was able to take over despite not being a majority is that the opposition failed at building alliances and working together via coalition building. We anti-fascists need to focus on coalition building with people we normally argue with, when they share the value of democracy and rights and rule of, by, and for the people.
@georgetakei
Mark Twain never said or wrote that quote attributed to him in the article. Neither did Samuel Clemens. 😛 However Canadian poet John Robert Colombo actually did. 🍁

@georgetakei

Many elected Dems seem to think it’s business as usual. That somehow nothing has changed since 2024

@georgetakei i mean substack supports nazis too sooo...
#FascistsGonnaFascist in #Trumpistan.
Americans don't understand (or appreciate) history and are therefore doomed to repeat it. War is coming. @georgetakei
@georgetakei The Fourth Reich is on its way!
@georgetakei "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach."

@georgetakei I am taking it a step further: I am seeing an alliance between USA and Russia forming, based on shared hate for the real European values (which are woke AF), and a love for fake christianity forged into a method of control.

I am preparing for war. Political, hybrid, then kinetic. WW3 has already started anyway. It’s been brewing in Ukraine since 2014, and the USA is more interested in becoming like Russia than stopping it.

@georgetakei
Hitler

Attempted failed coup
Didn't pay taxes
Had private militaristic force
Persecuted Judges who ruled against him
Had a Govt that voted however he wanted and eventually vote to dissolve itself
Attacked other countries
People were rounded up initially for deportation later for death camps
....

Trump
+ multiple fraud crimes
+ Sexually assaulted people, allegedly a pedo

@georgetakei

The Germans seem to be unable to learn from their own history as well, unfortunately 🥺

@georgetakei your dictatorship is certainly no "early warning sign", but a russian agent usurping the inept structures of your government.

Absoulte shitshow, you all should be ashamed and do something about it.

@georgetakei But, but, but, it could never happen here. Could it?
@georgetakei The US *IS* learning lessons from the rise of Nazis in Germany. Just not the ones you expected.

@georgetakei

People thought that giving the Nazis power would uncover their inability to govern.

Conservative and monarchists carried the Nazis into power because they thought they are the tool to bring back their privileges, the monarchy and the "good ol' times".

@georgetakei
And guess what? We are doing it in Germany again. You are, over there in the US, you are a lot faster. As usual in the last 50 years. But we don't have the moral standing to judge ...
I'm full of shame for my poeple

@georgetakei

More and more China looks better and better in comparison.
