Adolf Hitler's rise to power was marked by early warning signs that went ignored. Politicians dismissed the alarm bells and institutions believed the system would restrain what was coming. History shows clearly just how wrong those assumptions were. Now, as Trump and MAGA test the limits of our democracy, history is beginning to rhyme. https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/perfect-storm-trump-nazi-germany
U.S. Should Learn Lesson From Rise Of Nazis In Germany

When warnings are everywhere, and still no one moves

The Big Picture

@georgetakei The only bad thing about the article that it speaks about months, when it had been closer to weeks. It took only 6 weeks from Hitler getting appointed (not elected!) as chancellor to the first murders in Dachau concentration camp. And merely days, until the military was instructed to prepare for war.

Maybe it proves that Trump lacks the focus and drive of Hitler. But they share the same evil.

@urwumpe @georgetakei

Fully correct and I have the feeling that only few people know how incredibly fast the takeover was.

@mad @georgetakei Yes, also they underestimate how strong the opposition against Hitler was before he controlled the government. Just a week before, there were hundred thousands of protesters on the streets. Afterwards, the people got arrested before they could organize, only the big churches remained a small threat.

@urwumpe

If I would not have seen it in a historical reportage, I would not have believed it.
